Cross-Lingual Knowledge Editing in Large Language Models
Paper · 2024 · Jiaan Wang, Yunlong Liang, Zengkui Sun et al.
Summary
Most knowledge editing research updates and tests a model in a single language, so it is unclear whether a fact edited in one language carries over to another in a multilingual LLM. The authors study this cross-lingual effect for English and Chinese. They built Bi-ZsRE by machine-translating a subset of ZsRE, along with the portability QA pairs from Yao et al. (2023), into Chinese, using gpt-3.5-turbo and gpt-4. Human translators then corrected the test portion. They edited 7B-scale multilingual models (Chinese-LLaMA-Plus-7B, Chinese-LLaMA-2-7B, Baichuan-7B, Baichuan2-7B) in one language and evaluated them in the other, in both directions. The evaluation covered seven editing methods from the memory-based, meta-learning and locate-then-edit paradigms. Results were measured on reliability, generality, locality and portability. Existing methods transfer edited knowledge across languages poorly, and gaps in language modeling ability between languages affect how well edits work. Edits in one language can also disturb unrelated answers in the other language. Portability is weak in both languages, which suggests that models memorize surface wording rather than absorbing the knowledge. This exposes a real consistency problem for multilingual LLMs.
Key points
- Bi-ZsRE splits: 10,000 training, 3,000 validation and 1,037 test samples in each language (En/Zh). Training and validation data were translated by gpt-3.5-turbo, and the test data by gpt-4 at zero temperature.
- Quality control: three native Chinese translators reviewed the gpt-4 test translations and corrected about 6.0% of them. An experienced data expert then rechecked the corrections.
- Methods compared: seven methods across three paradigms, including SERAC, IKE, MEND, ROME and MEMIT. IKE scores well on reliability and generality but generally has lower locality than SERAC, ROME or MEMIT.
- Training-size study: using 100 to 5K training samples, SERAC mostly improves as data grows. IKE and MEND stay roughly flat, and their portability does not improve with more data.
- Stated limitations: only English and Chinese are covered, and only 7B models were tested. Data and code are released at github.com/krystalan/Bi_ZsRE.
