Revisiting Audio-language Pretraining for Learning General-purpose Audio Representation

Paper · 2026 · Wei-Cheng Tseng, Xuanru Zhou, Mingyue Huo et al.

Summary

Building one audio encoder that works well for speech, music and environmental sound is still an open problem. Supervised and self-supervised encoders tend to specialize, and audio–language pretraining (ALP) has mostly been judged on retrieval alone. The authors trace this to three causes: small audio–text corpora, captions that mainly name sound events, and few systematic comparisons.

Rather than proposing a new architecture, they run a controlled empirical study. They merge open-source caption corpora from several domains into CaptionStew, with 10.7M captions. On it they train audio encoders with two objectives: contrastive alignment (symmetric InfoNCE) and caption generation through a cross-attending text decoder. The encoders are tested on discriminative tasks, audio–language alignment and open-form question answering.

ALP yields competitive, transferable representations in all three domains. The two objectives show a trade-off: contrastive training gets more out of limited data, while captioning keeps improving as data grows. Supervised initialization helps less at larger scale. These results give evidence-based guidance for future general-purpose audio encoders.

Key points

  • CaptionStew: a 10.7M-caption dataset aggregated from existing open audio–text corpora that differ in domain and descriptive focus.
  • Objectives compared: contrastive (InfoNCE with a learnable temperature) versus captioning. The captioning setup uses mixed autoregressive/parallel training adapted from the vision-language method CapPa.
  • Main trade-off: contrastive training is more data-efficient, whereas captioning scales better with more data.
  • Initialization finding: gains from supervised initialization shrink at larger scales and for tasks other than audio event classification, which questions a common practice.
  • Limitations and release: CaptionStew has lower lexical diversity than mature image–text corpora, and experiments stop at about 10M pairs with modest model sizes. Data, code and models are released at github.com/AudenAI/Auden.
