Metaphor Understanding Challenge Dataset for LLMs
Summary
Metaphor is common in everyday language, yet it is unclear whether LLMs actually interpret it or just rely on surface word similarity. Existing interpretation resources are small and were not built to probe this. The authors introduce MUNCH, a benchmark built from sentences in the VU Amsterdam Metaphor Corpus (VUA). Each sentence has one highlighted, indirectly used metaphorical word. Apt single-word substitutes were gathered through a crowdsourced fill-in-the-blank task and then filtered by experts. Inapt substitutes were built by hand from WordNet synonyms or hypernyms of the word's literal, source-domain sense. These act as a control for lexical shortcuts.
LLaMA-13B, LLaMA-30B and GPT-3.5 were tested zero-shot on two tasks: paraphrase judgement and paraphrase generation. Both proved hard. In judgement, the models often scored below a random baseline and tended to mix up the source and target domains. Results improved when the metaphorical word was explicitly marked. MUNCH therefore offers a controlled way to find weak spots in LLM metaphor reasoning.
Key points
- Dataset size: about 3k metaphor samples, over 10k manually checked apt paraphrases, and 1.5k triples each pairing a sentence with an apt and an inapt candidate.
- Source and selection: sentences come from VUA (part of the British National Corpus) and cover four genres: academic, news, fiction and conversation. Selection used two filters:
- metaphors with novelty scores below -0.3 (Do Dinh et al., 2018) were excluded;
- direct metaphors were excluded, so that a single-word substitution is always possible.
- Models and tasks: LLaMA-13B, LLaMA-30B and GPT-3.5 were evaluated zero-shot on paraphrase judgement and paraphrase generation.
- Factors affecting performance: novelty, genre and POS of the metaphorical word all influenced results.
- Higher novelty hurt LLaMA-30B on judgement and GPT-3.5 on generation.
- The effects of genre and POS differed by model and task.
- Availability and crowdwork: the dataset is freely available at github.com/xiaoyuisrain/metaphor-understanding-challenge. Crowd workers were paid 9 GBP per hour.
