HCMUS RepeatedGames at SemEval-2026 Task 12: CausalRAG: Synergizing Causal Graph Retrieval and Extended LoRA for Abductive Reasoning

Paper · 2026 · Duy Minh Dao Sy, Nguyen Tran, Trung Kiet Huynh et al.

Summary

SemEval-2026 Task 12 (Abductive Event Reasoning, AER) gives systems a real-world event, about ten retrieved English documents per topic, and four candidate explanations. Systems must choose the one or more options that best explain the event, and one option always says that none of the others applies. The HCMUS_RepeatedGames team built CausalRAG, which treats the task as multi-label classification instead of text generation.

Retrieval combines BM25 and Sentence-BERT dense scores. It also gives extra weight to chunks where regex patterns detect explicit cause–effect wording. For reasoning, the team fine-tunes Qwen2.5-32B-Instruct with 4-bit QLoRA, extending the adapters from attention projections to the MLP layers. A small classification head is trained with binary cross-entropy, and training ends with one extra epoch on the development set.

On the official test set the system scored 0.90, tying for fifth place, compared with 0.63 for a DeBERTa-v3-large baseline. The authors attribute most of the gain to model scale. They also show that task-specific fine-tuning clearly beats zero-shot prompting of a larger model, which matters for reasoning tasks with little training data.

Key points

  • Data and metric: 1,819 train, 400 dev and 612 test instances, covering 36, 8 and 12 topics. In training, 42.7% of instances have several correct answers. Scoring gives 1.0 for an exact match, 0.5 when the prediction contains some but not all of the correct answers and nothing incorrect, and 0 otherwise.
  • Retrieval settings:
    • BM25 weight α = 0.3.
    • About 300-character chunks with 50-character overlap.
    • Top-3 chunks retrieved.
    • Chunks containing extracted causal edges have their scores multiplied by 1.5.
  • Extended LoRA:
    • Seven target modules (q/k/v/o_proj, gate/up/down_proj).
    • 268M trainable parameters, which is 0.81% of about 33B.
    • Rank 32, α = 64.
    • Trained on a single H100 80GB in roughly 6–8 hours.
  • Results:
    • Best dev score: 0.9363.
    • Test scores across submissions: 0.63 (baseline), 0.86 (7B), 0.88 (32B), 0.90 (Extended LoRA).
    • A fine-tuned 7B model (0.86) beat a zero-shot 32B model (0.70).
  • Negative findings and errors:
    • Following 2-hop causal paths brought no gain.
    • Multi-agent debate dropped the score to 0.59.
    • 87.7% of test instances were matched exactly.
    • The "none of the others" option was always handled correctly.
