Multilingual KokoroChat: A Multi-LLM Ensemble Translation Method for Creating a Multilingual Counseling Dialogue Dataset
Summary
Publicly available counseling dialogues written by humans are scarce, which slows the development of LLM-based mental health support systems. The authors addressed this by translating KokoroChat, a large Japanese corpus of role-played sessions by trained counselors, into English and Chinese. They argue that no single LLM translates every input best, and that this inconsistency is risky in a sensitive domain like counseling. Their solution is a fusion-style ensemble with two stages. First, several different LLMs each translate whole dialogues. Then a refiner LLM examines every candidate, states its strengths and weaknesses, and writes a final translation from that analysis. Selection-based ensembles pick one candidate per turn and can mix terminology and tone across turns, while this approach keeps whole dialogues consistent. In human preference studies, evaluators favored the ensemble output over each individual state-of-the-art LLM. The resulting resource, Multilingual KokoroChat, is described as the first multilingual psychological counseling dataset and is released openly.
Key points
- The source corpus, KokoroChat (Qi et al., 2025), has 6,589 sessions of 60 minutes each and roughly 600,000 utterances. Every dialogue carries 20-item feedback scores from the person playing the client.
- The released data has 6,582 En/Ja dialogues and 6,565 Zh/Ja dialogues, averaging 91.2 utterances each. A few dialogues were dropped because they triggered LLM safety filters.
- The pipeline generates three translation hypotheses per utterance, labeled hypothesis1–3 and drawn from models including GPT and Gemini. A refiner LLM then critiques and fuses them.
- The appendix shows that reference-free automatic metrics applied utterance by utterance unfairly penalize translations that read naturally in dialogue context. This helps explain why automatic and human evaluation results diverge.
- The dataset is available at github.com/UEC-InabaLab/MultilingualKokoroChat (LREC 2026).
