YNU-HPCC at SemEval-2026 Task 12: Retrieval-Guided Reasoning with Teacher Distillation for Abductive Event Reasoning

Summary
This paper presents the YNU-HPCC system submitted to SemEval-2026's Task 12 on Abductive Event Reasoning (AER). The task asks a system to select every option that directly causes a target event, using multi-document retrieved evidence that includes distractors. Scoring works on sets: an exact match earns full credit, a non-empty proper subset earns half, and anything else earns zero. The authors treat the task as multi-label classification over four options and build a two-stage pipeline. In Stage 1, a DeBERTa-v3-base student processes long documents as overlapping windows. BM25 ranks these windows against a query that combines the event and options, and Top-K mean pooling aggregates the window scores. The student is trained with Focal Loss, paraphrase augmentation and hard negatives. In Stage 2, the student is fine-tuned on soft labels from a Qwen-14B teacher, keeping only confident pseudo-labels. Dev results are near ceiling, but test topics are unseen and cause strong domain shift. The full pipeline raises the test score from 0.46 to 0.73. The results suggest that evidence coverage and pseudo-label filtering matter more than encoder strength alone.
Key points
- Stage 1 reaches an official dev score of 0.9712 (micro-F1 0.9746, macro-F1 0.9745), compared with 0.5437 for a BERT single-choice baseline. The final test score of 0.73 ranks 84th of 221 submissions.
- Test topics and documents have zero overlap with train/dev, and the longest train/dev document is about 280,000 characters.
- Settings: window 384, stride 224, max_len 512, up to 32 windows per question, Top-K with K=3, and predicted sets capped at 3 options.
- Ablations:
- Swapping BERT for DeBERTa without evidence modeling lowered the score (0.5437 → 0.5013).
- Sliding windows, Top-K pooling and Focal Loss gave the main gains.
- R-Drop and positive-class reweighting hurt the DeBERTa route.
- Test trajectory: Stage 1 scored 0.46. Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct paraphrasing raised it to 0.57, hard negatives to 0.63, and unfiltered distillation to 0.65. High-confidence filtering gave the final 0.73, which coincided with smaller predicted sets.
