Beyond Sentence-level Labels: Integrating Conversational Context and Personal Experience for Natural Emotional Expression

Paper · 2026 · Haiyang Sun, Chenyang Le, Wei Wang et al.

Summary

Emotional TTS systems usually condition each utterance on a single emotion tag or a short instruction. The authors argue this cannot explain why a speaker sounds a particular way. Drawing on cognitive appraisal theories, they add two missing inputs: the character's personal experience and the surrounding conversational context.

They build Emotional-Context-Speech, a large Mandarin corpus mined from multi-speaker audio dramas and their source novels. Audio is transcribed with Whisper, word-aligned with MFA, and matched to novel dialogue lines through pinyin-level sequential matching. Prosodic features are converted into integer tokens. DeepSeek-V3.2, prompted with chain-of-thought, then reads the narrative and these acoustic tokens together. It produces annotations for context, experience, open-vocabulary emotions, and paralinguistic descriptions.

A TTS model trained with these extra conditions, Emotional-Context-TTS, outperforms CosyVoice2/3 baselines in subjective tests of emotional accuracy and naturalness. The authors also observe that embedding-based objective metrics such as Emotion2Vec barely separate the systems. This suggests human evaluation remains necessary for nuanced, context-dependent affect.

Key points

  • Acoustic quantization:
    • Features: F0, speech rate, pauses, spectral centroid, RMS, MFCC variance, and HNR.
    • Each feature's range is estimated from 1,000 random samples and split into 10 bins, plus 5 extra bins for outliers.
    • Time-series features are downsampled to 10 Hz.
    • An ablation on English IEMOCAP showed better LLM-based emotion classification with these tokens.
  • Alignment details:
    • Novel utterances shorter than 5 units are filtered out.
    • Matching uses difflib's SequenceMatcher on phonetic (pinyin) strings.
  • Generalization test: GPT-4.1 generated story continuations for the ETS-C and ETS-P test sets.
    • Emotional-Context-TTS averaged 74.4 with OV-Emotion labels alone and 76.2 with experience and context added.
    • Its HA score reached 53.4%.
  • Evaluation: 10 professional judges took part. The authors note that context-aware evaluation is hard to scale because judges must first absorb character backgrounds and dialogue scenarios.
  • Release:
    • Checkpoints and features are on Hugging Face (Insects/Emotional-Context-Speech) under non-commercial terms.
    • Raw audio is not distributed because of copyright.
    • Stated limitations: performative audio-drama style and Chinese-only data.
