Reformulate and Create, Don't Translate: Creating Natural Prompts for Underserved Languages
Summary
Instruction-tuning data for Germanic languages other than English and German is scarce, and the usual shortcuts have drawbacks. Machine translation misses cultural nuance, synthetic generation narrows diversity and inherits model biases, and small annotator teams tend to write prompts that mirror their own interests. The authors adapt an idea from QA dataset construction: native speakers start from a varied seed set of English OpenAssistant (OASST2) prompts. They either rework each prompt into a natural, locally grounded request, optionally changing its content within the same task category, or write entirely new prompts. Recruited contributors used a custom open-source web platform and collected 6,950 prompts. The languages are German, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian Bokmål and Nynorsk, Danish, Icelandic and Faroese, and a dedicated task/topic taxonomy was used to check coverage. Native speakers then compared the human prompts with synthetic ones in a blind evaluation. They rated the human-reformulated prompts as more natural and easier to understand. The gap was largest for Icelandic and Faroese and smaller for Danish. The work provides a reusable method and an open resource for underserved languages.
Key points
- The dataset combines 5,950 human-written prompts in seven languages with 1,000 Norwegian Nynorsk prompts that were machine-translated and then human-validated. It is released on Hugging Face as
AnnikaSimonsen/TrustLLM-reformulation-prompts. - Contributors had two tasks: reformulating OASST2 English prompts with cultural adaptation (e.g., turning a red velvet cake recipe into one for prinsesstårta) and creating original prompts. The second task was meant to offset OASST2's skewed contributor demographics.
- The task taxonomy has 8 main categories and 29 subcategories. It draws on MT-Bench, Dolly and studies of ChatGPT usage, and it showed topic imbalances inherited from OASST2.
- Annotators came from the TrustLLM project or were hired students, not open crowdsourcing, to reduce the risk of LLM-generated submissions. The Flask-based annotation platform is open-source and can be adapted to other languages.
- In the blind evaluation, native speakers sorted each prompt into one of four categories: natural and comprehensible, somewhat natural but unclear, unnatural but comprehensible, or incomprehensible.
