CPT: A Pre-Trained Unbalanced Transformer for Both Chinese Language Understanding and Generation

Paper · 2021 · Yunfan Shao, Zhichao Geng, Yitao Liu et al.

Summary

Chinese pre-trained models are usually built either for understanding (BERT-style encoders) or for generation (GPT- or BART-style models). This forces practitioners to choose a backbone per task and prevents knowledge from being shared between NLU and NLG. The authors propose CPT, which splits a Transformer into three parts. A deep shared encoder (S-Enc) feeds two shallow heads. The first is an understanding decoder (U-Dec) with full self-attention, trained with masked language modeling using Whole Word Masking. The second is a generation decoder (G-Dec) with causal attention and cross-attention, trained with BART-style denoising auto-encoding. Both objectives are optimized jointly on unlabeled text. The two branches can be combined in several ways at fine-tuning time. The deep-shallow layout keeps the model's size close to BERT and BART, and the light generation decoder makes decoding much faster. Experiments covered classification, sequence labeling, reading comprehension, summarization and data-to-text tasks. CPT stayed competitive with strong Chinese baselines while generating faster than a comparable Chinese BART. This makes it a practical single backbone for mixed Chinese NLP workloads.

Key points

  • The architecture is unbalanced: a deep S-Enc plus two shallow decoders. U-Dec is pre-trained with MLM using WWM, and G-Dec with DAE using token infilling (one [MASK] per selected word) and sentence permutation.
  • Masking selects 15% of words after Chinese Word Segmentation. Of the masked characters, BERT's scheme replaces 80% with [MASK] and 10% with random tokens.
  • Classification tasks can be fine-tuned in at least five modes, using different combinations of the encoder and decoders.
  • Generation runs about 1.4–1.5× faster than BART at base size and up to 1.7× faster at large size, with comparable output quality. Evaluation sets include ADGEN data-to-text.
  • A Chinese BART is released as a by-product, and the code is available at github.com/fastnlp/CPT.
