From Pixels to BFS: High Maze Accuracy Does Not Imply Visual Planning
Paper · 2026 · Rodriguez Salgado, Alberto Gonzalo
Summary
The paper asks whether multimodal LLMs that solve visual mazes actually plan spatially, or whether they reach answers through exhaustive search in text. The author introduces MazeBench, a set of 110 procedurally generated 1024×1024 pixel-art mazes. They are split into nine controlled groups that vary grid size (5×5 to 20×20), wall density, traps, border walls, visual palette and reachability, with BFS-computed ground truth. A maze counts as solved only if the model returns the exact shortest sequence of moves; there is no partial credit. Nineteen configurations from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Alibaba are evaluated across different reasoning budgets, and the study records tokens consumed per solve. The best systems score highly: GPT-5.5 reaches 96% and GPT-5.4 91% on the 100-maze core set. Their reasoning traces, however, follow a two-step routine. They first transcribe the image into a text grid, then enumerate paths in prose, essentially running BFS verbally. The work matters because it shows that strong benchmark accuracy can conceal an expensive strategy that looks nothing like human visual reasoning.
Key points
- Brute-force search: Token cost per solve ranges from 1,096 to 22,818, a 14× gap between GPT-5.5 low and Gemini 3 Flash.
- Reasoning budget and maze size: With no thinking or the lowest budget, all 19 configurations solve only 2–15%. On 20×20 ultra-hard mazes, GPT-5.5 medium manages just 4/10, typically running out of tokens and answering "unreachable."
- Text-grid ablation: When given the correct text grid instead of the image, Claude Sonnet 4.6 rises from 6% to 80% and Claude Opus 4.7 from 31% to 90%. This identifies image-to-grid extraction as Claude's main weakness.
- Generation matters more than size: Within the Claude 4.6 generation, Opus 4.6 scores the same 4% as Haiku 4.5. Gains come from newer model generations rather than larger models.
- Prompting does not change the strategy: A prompt that forbids grids and graph search does not help. GPT-5.4 low scores 17/20 with it versus 19/20 with the standard prompt, and Sonnet 4.6 quietly reverts to grid enumeration anyway.
