Utilizing Suggestopedia Method in Teaching English Grammar

Summary

This qualitative case study asks whether Suggestopedia can help learners who struggle with English grammar. Suggestopedia is a teaching approach attributed to the Bulgarian Georgi Lozanov (1975) that tries to lower anxiety through a relaxed, pleasant classroom. The research took place in a linguistics class for female students at the Nurul Jadid Islamic boarding school's Al Hamidiyah section, located in Paiton, Probolinggo, Indonesia. The authors note that earlier work on the method covered speaking, reading, mathematics and Arabic, and that none focused only on grammar.

Data came from direct classroom observation and unstructured interviews with language-program teachers and one student. The analysis followed four stages: collecting data, reducing it, presenting it, and drawing conclusions.

According to the teachers, students understood grammar better and took a more active part when three things were combined: a comfortable room layout, calming background music, and a requirement that students restate the core material in their own way. No quantitative scores appear in the available text. The authors argue that varied, low-stress teaching can ease the fear of making mistakes that blocks grammar practice.
