Language-Grounded Multi-Domain Image Translation via Semantic Difference Guidance
Paper · 2026 · Jongwon Ryu, Joonhyung Park, Jaeho Han et al.
Summary
Changing several visual attributes of one image at once is hard for current diffusion editors. Examples include turning a cloudy daytime street into a snowy dusk scene, or aging a face while changing its gender. These editors tend to distort the layout or mix attributes together, and many rely on masks or spatial annotations. Ryu et al. present LACE, a diffusion framework that frames this task as language grounding: the semantic gap between a source and a target prompt is turned into a visual edit. LACE has two components:
- A GLIP-Adapter combines global CLIP tokens and local DINOv2 tokens from the input image into an image prompt, injected via cross-attention to keep structure and identity. Only this small adapter is trained.
- Multi-Domain Control Guidance (MCG) works at inference. It adds the scaled difference between source- and target-prompt noise predictions, one term per attribute, so each edit gets its own strength.
On CelebA(Dialog) faces and BDD100K driving scenes, LACE outperforms prior baselines in fidelity and structure preservation without masks.
Key points
- Two-encoder adapter: CLIP provides global semantics and DINOv2 provides fine spatial detail. The encoders and the diffusion backbone stay frozen during training.
- How MCG differs from classifier-free guidance: CFG steers from an unconditional prediction toward a conditional one. MCG instead steers along the source→target prompt direction, scaled by a factor s. Per-domain factors s₁…s_D let attributes be combined and tuned separately, e.g., heavier snow while keeping dusk lighting.
- Evaluation setup: CelebA(Dialog) covers local facial attributes, and BDD100K covers global weather and time-of-day changes. Each image receives up to three simultaneous edits.
- Ablations: Removing components shows that MCG brings clear FID and CLIP-similarity gains, and DDIM Inversion further improves structure preservation.
- Limitations stated by the authors:
- Inference cost grows with the number of attributes edited.
- Interference between attributes can occur (e.g., gender vs. hair length).
- The method is sensitive to ambiguous prompts.
- Validation covers only a few domains; the limitations section also mentions Animal Faces as a third dataset.
