FRMT: A Benchmark for Few-Shot Region-Aware Machine Translation
Summary
Most machine translation systems treat a language as a single target, so their output tends to drift toward the variety best represented online. This disadvantages speakers of other regional standards. FRMT (Riley et al., TACL 2023) is a benchmark for steering English-to-target translation toward a specific region. In this setting unlabeled data is abundant, but only a handful of region-labeled examples ("exemplars", 0–100) are available. The authors commissioned professional translations of English Wikipedia sentences into Brazilian and European Portuguese and into Mainland and Taiwan Mandarin. The data is grouped into lexical, entity and random buckets, which probe region-specific vocabulary and region-associated distractors. Each bucket is split into exemplar, dev and test portions with no Wikipedia page shared across splits. The authors score several baselines with automatic metrics and run expert MQM human evaluation for every pairing of rater region and target region. They also measure how well the metrics agree with human judgments and propose a lexical accuracy metric. PaLM 540B shows strong few-shot regional control, yet every system falls short of human references, most clearly in Mandarin. Methods that succeed here should transfer to other varieties and styles with little labeled data.
Key points
- Coverage and data sizes: four varieties (pt-BR, pt-PT, zh-CN, zh-TW) with sources drawn from wiki40b (v1.3.0).
- Portuguese: 341 exemplar, 2527 dev and 2616 test pairs.
- Mandarin: 388 exemplar, 2151 dev and 2227 test pairs.
- Bucket design:
- The lexical bucket is built around 23 Portuguese and 15 Mandarin region-dependent terms, each checked by native speakers.
- The entity bucket uses 34 Portuguese-focused and 38 Mandarin-focused entities.
- The random bucket shares identical English sources across all four targets.
- Translators and quality control: 14 paid professionals produced the translations (3 per Portuguese region, 4 per Mandarin region), with one reference per source. Quality was verified by independent translators using MQM.
- Exemplar sensitivity (PaLM 540B): a single exemplar already gives strong results, and adding more yields marginal gains. Resampling exemplars changed FRMT-BLEU and FRMT-BLEURT only slightly (standard deviation under 0.5 with 10 exemplars, under 1.0 with 1).
- Qualitative findings: M4-Prompts and M4-UR often default to web-majority terms (pt-BR, zh-CN) regardless of the target, whereas PaLM usually selects region-appropriate words. Regional differences also go beyond vocabulary, for example the date prepositions "em" (pt-BR) vs. "a" (pt-PT).
