DuReader_retrieval: A Large-scale Chinese Benchmark for Passage Retrieval from Web Search Engine
Paper · 2022 · Yifu Qiu, Hongyu Li, Yingqi Qu et al.
Summary
Dense passage retrieval depends on large, human-annotated training and evaluation data. Such resources are plentiful for English but scarce for Chinese, where existing sets are tiny (TianGong-PDR), machine-translated (mMARCO), or built only from click logs (Sougou-QCL). The authors present DuReader_retrieval, a Chinese benchmark derived from the DuReader reading-comprehension dataset. Its queries are real Baidu Search requests, and its passages come from search results. Training labels come from distant supervision.
The authors address two known problems with evaluation sets:
- Unlabeled relevant passages (false negatives): annotators re-checked the top results pooled from several retrievers.
- Test leakage: a query matching model was used to drop training queries that are semantically close to dev or test queries.
The release also includes two medical out-of-domain test sets and English queries translated by humans for cross-lingual retrieval. Sparse and neural baselines show the task is far from solved, with salient-phrase and syntactic mismatches remaining. Dense retrievers transfer poorly across domains, and cross-lingual search is clearly harder than monolingual search. This gives the Chinese retrieval community a cleaner and more demanding benchmark.
Key points
- Scale: 86,395 training, 2,000 dev and 4,000 test queries, retrieved over a collection of 8,096,668 passages. Dev and test queries average roughly 4.9 positive passages each.
- Dev and test labels are human-checked on pooled multi-retriever results. Training queries similar to dev or test queries were filtered with the query matching model of Zhu et al. (2021).
- Out-of-domain test sets: cMedQA (3,999 queries, 7,527 passages) and cCOVID-News (949 queries, 964 passages). Both come from the medical domain.
- Cross-lingual set: human-translated English queries averaging about 6.5 words, searched against Chinese passages. An mBERT retriever first trained on Chinese data and then tuned on English–Chinese pairs performed best.
- Limitations: about 14.8% of the best re-ranker's errors are still due to false negatives, and out-of-domain coverage is limited to medicine.
