Paintings, Mosaics, Icons. A Syriac Hymn on the Cathedral of Edessa

Summary

This is a philological and art-historical study, not an NLP paper. Polański examines an anonymous Syriac hymn (sugitho) about the Cathedral of Edessa, preserved in the 13th-century Codex Vaticanus 95. He sets it within the tradition of church consecration hymns and ecphrastic praise of buildings, from Eusebius to Procopius. The author compares the existing German, French and Polish translations, reconsiders the date, and reviews the uncertain history and location of the cathedral using Syriac chronicles. He also reinterprets disputed liturgical terms in the poem. His main claim is that the hymn dates to about 550, soon after the siege of 544. Two clues support this: the poem mentions the acheiropoietos image of Christ, and it names Bishop Amidonius as founder. He rejects later and earlier datings and suggests the poem may have influenced Paulus Silentiarius's ecphrasis of Hagia Sophia (563). The work matters because Edessa's cathedral was never excavated, so the hymn is a rare witness to 6th-century Eastern Christian aesthetics and architectural symbolism.

Key points

  • The source is Codex Vaticanus 95, fol. 49–50, a Jacobite tropologion. The poem uses sixteen-syllable verse arranged in two-verse stanzas.
  • The proposed date is c. 550. Grabar argued for the 7th century and Dupont-Sommer for the mid-5th century; the author rejects both.
  • The hymn alone preserves the architects' names, Asaf and Addai, alongside Bishop Amidonius. All three are compared to the biblical builder Beseleel.
  • Earlier translations and commentaries used: Goussen 1925, Schneider 1941, Dupont-Sommer 1947, Kania; Grabar 1947 is a key interpretive study.
  • One Syriac term is read as "altar" in its narrow sense in stanza XVIII and as "chancel" by metonymy in stanza XIX. The "Cherub" is interpreted as a ciborium-like canopy over the altar.

Interesting ideas

  • I1. The poem is dated by combining a lower bound (it mentions an object first attested after 544) with an upper bound (later wars made such a celebration implausible). — For Mova (world): Event ordering could intersect "not before" and "not after" constraints drawn from the entities a text mentions, yielding an explainable time window instead of a single guess.
  • I2. The same word is given different senses in neighbouring stanzas. The deciding argument is that any other reading would leave the described church with no altar at all. — For Mova (frames): Word sense choice could check whether the scene the text builds still contains its expected parts, and prefer the reading that does not leave a required slot empty.
  • I3. Two churches that tradition tends to merge are kept apart because their recorded properties clash: a columned basilica versus a domed central plan. — For Mova (frames): Coreference could block merging two mentions when their attributes contradict, and record that contradiction as the reason for the split.
  • I4. Several independent translations disagree on key terms, and the author decides each point by weighing them against each other and against other sources. — For Mova (learn): This mirrors silver data built from agreeing witness parsers; places where witnesses disagree should be flagged for adjudication rather than averaged away.
  • I5. The opening phrase, roughly "a prior poem", is taken to presuppose a companion hymn, possibly one about the pulpit. — For Mova (frames): Implicature handling could treat ordinal or relational words like "prior" or "second" as signals that a related entity exists, and add that entity to the text's world as a hypothesis.
