Mixed-Initiative Dialogue Management for Human-Virtual Agents Interaction in Forum Theatre Inspired Training
Paper · 2026 · Samuel Otofa, Yacine Zerenini, Frederic Bechet et al.
Summary
The paper presents a virtual reality demonstrator for anti-discrimination training. It is modelled on Augusto Boal's forum theatre, in which spectators step into a scene to try alternative reactions. The use case is everyday sexism at work: a male supervisor questions a female employee's ability to lead a team. The user goes through three phases:
- Witness: watching two autonomous virtual agents act out the scene.
- Discussion: analysing the problematic behaviours by talking with a virtual character.
- Confrontation: replaying the scene as the targeted person and trying to change its outcome.
The core technical contribution is a mixed-initiative dialogue controller. It lets an LLM handle open conversation but keeps it under an explicit dialogue state. That state records which discriminatory situations still need to be discussed. Scripted sequences can take over when needed, for explanations, legal context, or recovery from sensitive input. Agent behaviour comes from a motion-captured corpus of forum theatre performances. The paper reports no evaluation yet. Its value is as an architecture that balances flexibility with safety for dialogue on sensitive topics.
Key points
- Pipeline: Google Speech API for ASR, inworld-tts-1-max for speech synthesis, Unity for VR animation, and Gemini-2.5-flash for generating turns.
- Dialogue controller: a Contextual Spoken Language Understanding (CSLU) module does four things:
- tracks which situations have been discussed;
- triggers scripted sequences;
- detects when a stage is finished;
- flags harmful output from the user or the LLM, then starts a corrective script or ends the session.
- LLM prompt and output: the prompt combines a persona, a stage description with state labels, behaviour guidelines, and stage-specific goals. The LLM returns JSON containing the avatar's utterance and any dialogue-state labels it detected.
- Animation: built from the corpus of Ochs et al. (2023), with actors from NextLevel, using iClone, OpenFace, Mixamo and SALSA lip-sync. It includes 8 idle, 10 listening, 9 talking, 19 facial and 16 head animations.
- Future work: extending the system to other forms of bias and assessing engagement and learning through surveys.
