UniK-QA: Unified Representations of Structured and Unstructured Knowledge for Open-Domain Question Answering

Paper · 2022 · Barlas Oguz, Xilun Chen, Vladimir Karpukhin et al.

Summary

Open-domain QA systems usually rely on a single kind of knowledge. Text-based approaches use retriever-reader pipelines, while KB-based approaches depend on semantic parsing or graph methods. Combining the two has typically meant either complex multi-system setups or graph models that perform poorly. UniK-QA takes a different route: every source, including lists, tables and knowledge-base triples, is converted into plain text with simple heuristics, and one standard text QA pipeline then handles all of them. A DPR retriever pulls candidates from the mixed pool, and a Fusion-in-Decoder reader reads them together to generate the answer. Treating KB facts as text alone beats recent graph-based KBQA methods on WebQSP by about 11 points. Adding heterogeneous sources consistently helps over strong text-only baselines, and a single model trained on several datasets outperforms all single-source variants. The work shows that structured knowledge can be added to pre-trained transformer QA without schema-specific machinery. The authors note two limitations: questions with multiple answers and multi-hop reasoning.

Key points

  • The knowledge pool holds about 27 million Wikipedia text/list passages, 455,907 linearized Wikipedia tables, and roughly 3 billion relations from Freebase and Wikidata.
  • The architecture pairs a DPR retriever (BERT-base encoders, 100-token passages) with an FiD reader on T5-large, which reads 100 context documents.
  • The method sets new state-of-the-art results on NaturalQuestions (+3.5 points) and WebQuestions (+2.6 points). Evaluation also covers TREC and TriviaQA.
  • The number of KB passages among the 100 contexts is tuned for retrieval recall. WebQuestions receives the largest share (30–40), consistent with its origin as a KBQA dataset.
  • Code, data and checkpoints are released at github.com/facebookresearch/UniK-QA.
