The Implications of Dialectal Differences in the Arabian Peninsula on Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language
Paper · 2026 · Fatwiah Noor, Zein Ridha, Bakri Mohammed Bkheet Ahmed et al.
Summary
The paper looks at a mismatch in Arabic teaching. Foreign learners are usually taught Modern Standard Arabic (MSA, fuṣḥā), but native speakers mostly talk to each other in regional dialects (ʿāmmiyyah). As a result, learners who are competent in MSA can still struggle in everyday conversation. The authors ran a qualitative library study using documentation and content analysis. Their sources were books, journal articles, conference papers, reports, audiovisual material and a few blogs. Their comparison covered four groups of dialects: Egyptian, Gulf (Khalījiyyah), the Levantine varieties (Shāmiyyah) and Maghrebi. The differences they found fall mainly into three areas: sound system, lexicon and grammatical structure. Even so, every group remains closely tied to MSA. The variation is linked to geography, social structure, culture, migration, contact with other languages and habits of use. The authors' teaching recommendation is to keep MSA as the base and add the dialects that each learner's communicative situation actually requires. The work matters because it frames dialect awareness as part of communicative competence rather than an optional extra. It offers no quantitative evaluation.
Key points
- Four groups of dialects are compared: Maghrebi, Egyptian, the Gulf varieties (Khalījiyyah) and the Levantine varieties (Shāmiyyah).
- Method:
- library research with documentation as the collection technique;
- content analysis following Komaruddin (2000), plus triangulation across sources;
- blogs and YouTube used only as supplementary sources, because no single comprehensive reference on contemporary dialects exists.
- Phonological examples:
- qāf (ق) is realized as a glottal stop in Egyptian.
- qāf becomes /g/ in Moroccan Darija. The introduction attributes /g/ to some Gulf varieties.
- dhāl (ذ) becomes dāl (د) in some Levantine speech.
- Geographic scope: the peninsula is defined as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Yemen, Oman, the UAE, Qatar and Bahrain. However, three of the four groups studied (Egyptian, Maghrebi, Levantine) are spoken mostly outside that area.
- Drivers of variation: geography, society, culture, migration, language contact and usage patterns.
Interesting ideas
- I1. The authors treat one standard variety as a hub and describe each dialect by its systematic sound correspondences to it (for example qāf → ʔ or /g/), rather than as an unrelated language.
- I2. Dialect distance is split into three separate layers: phonology, vocabulary and structure. This makes it possible to say where two varieties actually diverge.
- I3. The study cross-checks heterogeneous sources (academic texts, audiovisual material, blogs) and weighs the minor ones by the author's credibility.
- I4. The proposed curriculum puts the standard variety first and then adds only the variants a learner needs for their context.
- I5. The core diagnosis is a gap between the variety used in the classroom and the one used in real life.
For Mova
How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:
- I1 (tokens): Non-standard English spellings and regional forms could be normalized to a standard lemma through an explicit, inspectable correspondence table, keeping every mapping explainable.
- I2 (tree): When converting between UD dialects or adapting gparse to a new treebank, mismatches could be logged per layer (tokenization/morphology, lexicon, syntactic construction) so that repair targets the right component.
- I3 (learn): Witness parsers and LLM teacher tiers in silver-data agreement could likewise carry credibility weights, so weaker witnesses only supplement and never decide alone.
- I4 (learn): Training could start from standard treebanks and then mix in informal or domain-specific data only for the target domains.
- I5 (answer): The readers could be tested on informal, conversational versions of school-course and fable questions, to check that competence on clean textbook English carries over to real usage.
