DANGNT@SGU at SemEval-2026 Task 1: A Two-Stage Mistral Generator with DistilBERT Reranking for English Humor Generation
Paper · 2026 · Tan Loc Nguyen and Dang Tuan Nguyen
Summary
This paper describes the system DANGNT@SGU submitted to Subtask A of SemEval-2026 Task 1 (MWAHAHA), in the English-language category. The task asks systems to write short jokes under two kinds of constraints: including two given words (Word Inclusion) or relating to a news headline (News Headline). Organizers supplied no reference jokes, so the authors built their own training data. For Word Inclusion, they used spaCy to extract keywords from the Kaggle Short Jokes corpus. For News Headline, they paired official headlines with jokes through sentence-embedding similarity.
They fine-tuned Mistral-7B-Instruct-v0.2 with QLoRA in two steps:
- Stage 1: the model learns general joke style from raw jokes.
- Stage 2: the model learns the task's prompt formats.
At inference, the system samples five candidates per prompt. A DistilBERT classifier, trained to separate jokes from Wikipedia text, picks the best one.
The submission placed 13th with Elo 962. Local ablations suggest that each training stage contributes a different benefit. The pipeline uses only open models and public data, which makes it a reproducible baseline for controllable humor generation.
Key points
- Official result: 13th place in the English leaderboard, Elo 962 (95% CI 926–986), based on human pairwise judgments.
- Resources:
- Generator: mistralai/Mistral-7B-Instruct-v0.2 with 4-bit NF4 QLoRA (r = 64, α = 16, adapters on q/k/v/o).
- Reranker: distilbert-base-uncased.
- Headline–joke matching: all-MiniLM-L6-v2 with a cosine threshold of 0.4.
- Reranker negatives: wikimedia/wikipedia (20231101.en).
- Training data balance: Stage 2 caps Word Inclusion to News Headline pairs at roughly 10:1.
- Local ablation (100 prompts, top-1 output, no reranker):
- Stage 2 raised word-inclusion success from 68% to 96%.
- Adding Stage 1 lifted the mean DistilBERT joke score from 0.58 to 0.74, versus 0.44 for zero-shot.
- Reported weaknesses:
- Outputs can include the required words yet still be unfunny.
- Jokes drift away from the headline topic.
- The reranker favors generic short jokes.
- The code is released at github.com/tanloc49/dangnt-sgu-mwahaha.
