Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar: The handbook

Summary

The handbook summarizes the current state of Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG). It is a declarative, constraint-based grammatical theory with only a single level of representation. It was initiated by Carl Pollard and Ivan Sag in the mid-1980s. The editors aimed to create a single authoritative source on this framework and to make it available free of charge. The framework itself strives to be linguistically well-founded, formally rigorous, and suitable for computational implementation at the same time. The book contains 32 chapters by leading researchers, divided into five parts:

  • introductory foundations and the formal apparatus;
  • core syntactic phenomena: agreement, case, constituent order, control, coordination, ellipsis;
  • morphology, semantics, and information structure;
  • the connection to language processing, computational linguistics, dialogue, and gesture;
  • comparison with other theories.

Each chapter was reviewed by other authors and the editors. The book was published in open access together with its LaTeX source code and a manually verified bibliography. For NLP, it is useful as a systematic introduction to precision grammars for grammar engineering. It also provides a formal description of case and agreement, which is important for inflectional languages such as Ukrainian.

Key points

  • Separate chapters are devoted to grammar engineering together with computational linguistics (by Guy Emerson and Emily M. Bender), language processing (Thomas Wasow), understudied languages (Douglas L. Ball), and case (Adam Przepiórkowski).
  • HPSG borrowed ideas from GPSG, Categorial Grammar, and LFG. Later, a constructional version of HPSG (mid-1990s) and Sign-Based Construction Grammar emerged.
  • The comparative part contrasts HPSG with Minimalism, Categorial Grammar, LFG, Dependency Grammar, and Construction Grammar.
  • The bibliography contains 2623 manually checked entries. It can be downloaded as PDF or BibTeX from github.com/langsci/hpsg-handbook-bib, and the book's source code is available at github.com/langsci/259.
  • Some areas, notably phonology, are not covered by the book. Publisher: Language Science Press, series EOTMS 9, DOI 10.5281/zenodo.5543318.
