AraDiCE: Benchmarks for Dialectal and Cultural Capabilities in LLMs
Paper · 2025 · Basel Mousi, Nadir Durrani, Fatema Ahmad et al.
Summary
Large language models handle Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) reasonably well but often fail on spoken Arabic dialects, and there were few tools to measure this. The authors built AraDiCE, a benchmark suite that tests dialect understanding and generation, cognitive abilities, and regional cultural knowledge. They translated seven widely used English and Arabic benchmarks into MSA, then into Levantine and Egyptian Arabic. For the dialect step they used their own MSA-to-dialect translation systems, and human editors corrected the output. They also wrote a new cultural test covering the Gulf, Egypt and the Levant.
Testing showed that Arabic-centric models such as Jais and AceGPT beat multilingual ones like Llama 3 and Mistral on dialects. Even so, every model scored lower on dialects than on MSA or English. Identifying, generating and translating dialects were especially weak areas. Results were better for Gulf Arabic, likely because it is closer to MSA. The work shows that dialect-aware training is needed, and the released data and models give future research a common way to compare systems.
Key points
- About 45K post-edited samples. The translated benchmarks are ArabicMMLU, BoolQ, PIQA, OBQA, Winogrande, Belebele and TruthfulQA. Existing sets ADD, ADI, QADI, MADAR and a dialectal response dataset were also used.
- Translation pipeline: Google Translate for English→MSA, then fine-tuned AraT5 and NLLB for MSA→dialect. These were trained on MADAR, UFAL, LDC, ArzEn-MultiGenre and SADID.
- AraDiCE-Culture started from 180 seed questions written by native annotators. Questions were kept only if Google results showed different answers per country, leaving 30. These were rendered in the dialects of six countries, with gold answers following the NativeQA framework.
- Models up to 13B parameters were tested. A one-off run found Jais 30B performing about the same as Jais 13B on ArabicMMLU.
- Benchmarks and translation models are released at huggingface.co/datasets/QCRI/AraDiCE. Maghrebi and Sudanese dialects are not covered.
