Bring the Apple, Not the Sofa: Impact of Irrelevant Context in Embodied AI Commands on VLA Models

Paper · 2026 · Andrey Moskalenko, Daria Pugacheva, Denis Shepelev et al.

Summary

Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models are usually tested on short, clean instructions. Real users, however, rephrase commands and wrap them in chatter. This paper measures how much such linguistic noise hurts robot policies. The authors built an evaluation protocol with two kinds of perturbation:

  • Crowdsourced human paraphrases of each benchmark instruction.
  • Controlled irrelevant context, varied by length and by how close it is semantically and lexically to real commands.

They ran five VLA models (OpenVLA, UniAct, MoDE, π0, LLARP) in the LIBERO and Habitat 2.0 simulators. All models degrade as added context grows. Unrelated random filler costs little. Distractors resembling training commands roughly halve success rates. Natural paraphrasing alone causes about a 20% loss. An embedding analysis on the Llama 2 7B backbone links these failures to how similar the context is to the target command. A few-shot LLM pre-filter mainly removes random noise and struggles with command-like distractors. The study exposes a safety and reliability gap for deploying VLAs with real people. It also hints that adversarial attacks become possible when the backbone is known.

Key points

  • Setup: Five models were tested on LIBERO (Spatial, Object, Goal, Long suites) and Habitat 2.0.
  • Context taxonomy:
    • Length-based variants: Single, Short, Long.
    • Proximity-based variants: Location, Description, Infeasible.
  • Size of the drops:
    • Random context reduces success by under 10%.
    • Semantically and lexically similar context of equal length reduces it by around 50%.
    • The worst drop reaches 58% when context length approaches command length.
    • Human paraphrases reduce success by nearly 20%.
  • Embedding analysis: When context–command cosine similarity in Llama 2 7B final-layer embeddings exceeds 0.75, successful episodes fall by 20–50%, about 40% on average.
  • Observed failure behaviors:
    • Manipulators grasp the wrong objects early in the episode, e.g., π0 picks up a cup instead of turning on the stove.
    • LLARP navigates toward locations mentioned in the distractor rather than the true goal.
