MultiSocial: Multilingual Benchmark of Machine-Generated Text Detection of Social-Media Texts
Paper · 2025 · Dominik Macko, Jakub Kopál, Robert Moro et al.
Summary
Most research on detecting machine-generated text (MGT) targets English and long, polished genres such as news or essays. Social-media posts are different: they are brief, informal, often ungrammatical, and full of hashtags and emoticons. No multilingual benchmark existed for this setting. The authors built MultiSocial to fill that gap. They took human posts and chat messages from existing public datasets covering five platforms and produced machine counterparts with seven multilingual LLMs. Each machine text came from three rounds of paraphrasing a human original. They picked this generation strategy after comparing several alternatives with human judgement, similarity metrics and LLM judges. They then evaluated 17 detectors, both zero-shot and fine-tuned. Fine-tuned detectors learn social-media data without difficulty, and the strongest ones perform fairly evenly across languages. Zero-shot methods still show an English versus non-English gap. The platform used for training strongly affects how well detectors transfer. This makes the resource useful for low-resource languages, including Ukrainian.
Key points
- Scale and coverage:
- 472,097 texts in total, of which about 58k are human-written.
- 22 languages from 4 families, mostly Indo-European.
- Split into 331,209 train and 140,888 test samples.
- Ukrainian appears in train (7,802 samples, Telegram only) and in test (2,586 samples).
- Platforms: Telegram, Twitter (X), Gab, Discord and WhatsApp. Some languages appear only in the test split: Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Slovak and Slovenian.
- Generators: Aya-101, Gemini, GPT-3.5-Turbo-0125, Mistral-7B-Instruct-v0.2, OPT-IML-Max-30b, v5-Eagle-7B-HF and Vicuna-13b.
- Cross-platform findings:
- Training on Telegram gives the best cross-lingual transfer.
- Detectors trained on Discord lose up to 27% performance when tested on Twitter.
- Data quality and licensing:
- About 1% of the generated texts are generation failures. They are flagged in the release and were excluded from the experiments.
- The data is anonymized and licensed for non-commercial research only.
- Code is on GitHub (kinit-sk/multisocial) and the dataset is on Zenodo.
