Discourse Structure, Verb Forms, and Archaism in Psalm 18
What it is about
Not read: the PDF could not be fetched. From the title and the author's known framework (text-linguistic "verb rank" schemes for narrative, predictive, hortatory and expository discourse): the paper analyses the verb forms of Psalm 18 (parallel to 2 Samuel 22), a poem that narrates past rescue, and how the poem uses old prefix forms (short yiqtol with past meaning, a preterite) where prose would use wayyiqtol or qatal. It ties the alternation of forms to the poem's discourse structure (sections, peak). Check against the text.
Ideas
- I1. (to check) In Torah poetry (Exod 15, Deut 32–33, Gen 49, Num 23–24), do not read a prefix form without waw as future by default; flag yiqtol forms in a past-narrative poetic context as possible preterites and count them.
- I2. Compare the parallel texts Psalm 18 and 2 Samuel 22 form by form as a natural experiment on verb-form variation (outside the Torah; for the manual).
For Mova
I1 applies to the genre section of languages/hbo/09-discourse.md §11 and to 06-verb.md (yiqtol, the preterite); in src/prag.rs a poetry flag would stop the future reading. I2 is a manual example. Re-read once the PDF is in.
