LongVideoAgent: Multi-Agent Reasoning with Long Videos
Paper · 2026 · Runtao Liu, Ziyi Liu, Jiaqi Tang et al.
Summary
Answering questions about hour-long videos is difficult because the relevant evidence is scattered and sparse. Most multimodal LLMs downsample or compress the whole video up front, which loses fine-grained details and weakens temporal grounding. The authors propose LongVideoAgent, a framework where a master LLM manages two helpers over several rounds. A grounding agent locates the clips relevant to the question, and a vision agent reports specific visual details from those clips as text. The master agent stops when it judges that it has enough evidence, or when it reaches a step limit.
When the master is an open-source LLM, it is fine-tuned with GRPO reinforcement learning while the helper agents stay frozen. The reward combines output format and answer correctness. For evaluation, the authors build LongTVQA and LongTVQA+, episode-level benchmarks created by merging TVQA/TVQA+ clips into full episodes. The agentic system clearly beats non-agent baselines, and RL training further improves planning. The approach also produces readable reasoning traces and works with both closed and open LLMs.
Key points
- Agent ablation: on a fixed backbone, accuracy rises from 64.3 (single LLM) to 69.0 with grounding and to 74.8 with grounding plus vision, a gain of +10.5.
- Step limit: raising the step limit K from 2 to 5 lifts answer accuracy from 68.30 to 73.67 and localization from 67.0 to 71.0. K = 10 gives no further gain, so K = 5 is the default.
- Vision backbone: GPT-4o as the vision agent (78.00 answer accuracy) outperforms Qwen3-VL-235B-a22b (73.67).
- Context window: widening the clip window from 1 to 3 adjacent clips improves answer accuracy from 70.33 to 77.26, but adds latency.
- Limitations: the system relies on provided subtitles rather than raw audio/ASR, the helper agents are not trained jointly, and the reward is simple.
