CLEVA: Chinese Language Models EVAluation Platform
Paper · 2023 · Yanyang Li, Jianqiao Zhao, Duo Zheng et al.
Summary
Evaluating the growing number of Chinese large language models is difficult. Existing Chinese benchmarks focus mostly on exam-style knowledge and reasoning or report accuracy alone. Prompts differ between studies, so scores cannot be compared. Contamination is usually checked only after testing. CLEVA is an evaluation platform that addresses all three problems. Following the HELM taxonomy, it splits tasks into ability evaluation (language, knowledge, reasoning, harms and others) and application assessment (practical NLP use cases). It adds tasks specific to Chinese, such as Pinyin transliteration and classical Chinese understanding. Every task gets several prompt templates, and all data goes through the same preprocessing. To prevent contamination before it happens, about a third of the data is newly collected, and each leaderboard round draws its own subset from a large augmented pool. Users need only a model API and a few clicks. In tests of 23 models, GPT-4 and other restricted-access systems clearly beat open-source models on accuracy. Rankings changed noticeably on fairness, calibration, bias and diversity. This shows why measuring more than accuracy matters.
Key points
- The benchmark contains about 370K test instances (over 9 million after augmentation) drawn from 84 datasets. Newly collected data makes up 33.98% of the total.
- It uses nine metrics: the seven from HELM (e.g., accuracy, robustness, fairness, calibration) plus diversity and privacy.
- 23 Chinese-capable LLMs were tested on a 6.43% sample, ranked by mean win rate over 31 tasks. Evaluating BLOOMZ-176B-mt alone took roughly 1600 A100 GPU hours.
- On calibration (ECE-10), larger models such as GLM-130B and LLaMA-65B scored worse. Open-source models showed lower gender bias, largely because their outputs are shorter, and they also showed higher output diversity.
- Code and the leaderboard are at github.com/LaVi-Lab/CLEVA.
