Summary

This item is the editor's preface to a section of Aethiopica that collects papers from a workshop on teaching Amharic in Germany, held at the Hiob-Ludolf-Zentrum, Universität Hamburg, on 1–2 February 2018. It is not an NLP paper. It contains no corpus, model or evaluation. The problem it addresses is pedagogical. Amharic has been taught in Germany for a long time, a century at Hamburg alone, yet the available teaching materials are mostly old in both method and content. The workshop brought German teachers of Amharic together to share syllabi, new ways of teaching difficult grammar, vocabulary and skills, and classroom activities. Each participant had to bring at least one activity for plenary discussion. Krzyżanowska lists the ten talks, explains which six appear in the section, and notes that Amharic instruction in Germany has shrunk to just two institutions. The collection matters as a first organised attempt to update Amharic language teaching, with contributions grounded in both knowledge of the language and its culture and in current pedagogy.

Key points

  • The workshop had ten presentations, three of them by guest speakers: Alessandro Bausi, Ludwig Gerhardt (on 100 years of Amharic teaching in Hamburg) and Denis Nosnitsin (on premodern Amharic poetry, published elsewhere). The section itself contains six articles.
  • Only two German institutions currently teach Amharic: Universität Hamburg and the Bundessprachenamt in Hürth. About ten years earlier it was also offered at places such as Leipzig and Freie Universität Berlin.
  • The grammar-focused articles are:
    • Guss-Kosicka on using Montessori part-of-speech symbols
    • Fridman on relying on predicative units to analyse and translate written Amharic
    • Krzyżanowska on how to begin teaching Amharic verbs
  • Kellermann reports on developing materials for intensive Amharic courses at Hürth. Talks by Getie Gelaye (songs and poems) and Maija Priess (an online express course) are not printed.
  • The workshop was organised by Getie Gelaye and Magdalena Krzyżanowska. The journal header gives the volume as Aethiopica 22 (2019), pp. 134–136.

Interesting ideas

  • I1. The preface only names these approaches, but one is to give each word class a fixed visual symbol, as in the Montessori-based article. This makes grammatical categories visible to a learner at a glance. — For Mova (tokens): POS and morphology output could be rendered with consistent per-class glyphs in explanation views, making tagger decisions easier for humans to audit.
  • I2. Another is to analyse a text by first locating its predicative units and then building the reading around them, as in Fridman's title. This anchors understanding on predicates rather than individual words. — For Mova (frames): it supports segmenting sentences into predicate-centred chunks before role assignment, so each frame is built and explained from its own predicate outward.
  • I3. A third concerns where to start teaching verbs. This treats the order in which a morphologically rich system is introduced as a design decision in its own right. — For Mova (learn): training or repair-rule induction could follow an explicit curriculum, starting with the most regular verb patterns before harder ones, and measuring gains at each step.
  • I4. The workshop required every participant to bring one concrete activity for group discussion, so that claims were tied to a usable artefact. — For Mova (learn): each proposed change could be required to come with a small runnable test case reviewed alongside it, keeping improvements concrete and checkable.
