An Incremental Entity-Mention Model for Coreference Resolution with Restrictive Antecedent Accessibility
Summary
The paper addresses weaknesses of the classic mention-pair approach to coreference resolution. That approach classifies every anaphor–antecedent pair before building clusters, which produces redundant pairs, heavily skewed training data, underspecified candidates, and no built-in transitivity.
Klenner and Tuggener propose an incremental entity-mention model. Markables are processed in textual order, and each new mention is compared only against a "virtual prototype" of every emerging coreference set, which pools the morphological and semantic properties of its members, plus a buffer of non-anaphoric mentions. Access to the buffer is restricted, and further filters handle anaphora type, an approximation of binding theory via subclause detection, and WordNet/GermaNet lookups. Antecedents are chosen either by TiMBL classifiers or by a Lappin–Leass-style salience measure whose dependency-label weights are estimated from gold-standard data (TüBa-D/Z, OntoNotes).
On German, the incremental model outperforms a non-incremental counterpart. The simple salience variant beats the SemEval 2010 systems in a post-task evaluation and is competitive in BioNLP 2011. This suggests that improving pair generation and antecedent accessibility matters as much as improving the classifier.
Key points
- Training instances on fold 1 of TüBa-D/Z (about 5,000 sentences) drop roughly fourfold, from 171,526 (mention-pair) to 40,229 (entity-mention).
- Separate classifiers are trained per anaphora type (nominal, reflexive, possessive, relative, personal pronouns) using Soon et al. (2001)-style features. The mention-pair baseline clusters with the Balas algorithm.
- In the SemEval 2010 open/regular setting, the salience-based incremental system scored best on nearly all metrics, the exception being MUC for English. For German, its CEAF reached R 76.8 / P 70.4, against BART's 61.4 / 61.2.
- The gains came mainly from precision. Recall stayed relatively low partly because bridging anaphora was not resolved.
- On the CoNLL 2011 development set the system scored MUC F1 47.39, BCUB 65.44, CEAFE 42.03, and BLANC 66.81. The authors attribute the lower scores mainly to the stricter CoNLL scorer and to singletons not being annotated.
