SALMA: Arabic Sense-Annotated Corpus and WSD Benchmarks
Paper · 2023 · Mustafa Jarrar, Sanad Malaysha, Tymaa Hammouda et al.
Summary
Arabic word sense disambiguation (WSD) has lagged because the language had no sense-annotated corpus and no ready sense inventory. The authors present SALMA, a ~34K-token corpus of Modern Standard Arabic in which every token carries sense annotations. Two digitized lexicons serve as inventories: the Contemporary Arabic Dictionary ("Modern") and Al-Ghani Al-Zaher ("Ghani"). Rather than choosing a single correct sense, annotators grade every candidate sense of a word on an ordinal relatedness scale, and they do this separately for each lexicon. A dedicated web tool supports this workflow. The corpus also marks six named-entity types. Agreement among annotators, measured with several categorical and ordinal metrics, is reported as very high. To set baselines, the authors built an end-to-end WSD pipeline based on Target Sense Verification (TSV), which scores context–gloss pairs and picks the highest-scoring gloss. They tested three existing Arabic TSV models with it. ArabGlossBERT reached 84.2% accuracy with Modern, and Aug-ArabGlossBERT(D9) reached 78.7% with Ghani. Both the corpus and the tool are openly released.
Key points
- SALMA contains 34,253 tokens in 1,439 sentences, averaging 23.8 tokens per sentence. It is drawn from 33 MSA online media sources and is a subset of the Wojood corpus. It covers 19,030 nouns, 2,763 verbs and 7,116 function words, and uses 4,151 unique senses from each inventory.
- The grading scale has six levels: Explicate 100%, General 80%, Referral 60%, Related 40%, Root semantics 20% and Different 1%. A sense counts as correct if it scores at least 60%.
- The named-entity labels are PERS, ORG, GPE, LOC, FAC and CURR. Three linguists annotated the corpus, and IAA was checked on 2.6% of the words using Kappa, LWK, QWK, MAE and RMSE.
- Accuracy for the three TSV models (Modern / Ghani), using an 11-token context window:
- Razzaz: 66.0% / 68.4%
- ArabGlossBERT: 84.2% / 77.6%
- Aug-ArabGlossBERT(D9): 82.6% / 78.7%
- Further results for ArabGlossBERT:
- Top-3 accuracy rises to about 98% with Modern.
- Nouns score about 8.5 points above verbs with Modern.
- Function words stay near 32–42%.
- Changing the context window size alters accuracy by at most 1.4 points.
Interesting ideas
- I1. Each candidate sense gets a graded relatedness score instead of a single gold label, which handles vague or overlapping glosses and lets the same data evaluate ranking-based disambiguators.
- I2. The same text is annotated against two independent inventories, so the corpus also measures how well each dictionary covers the text and how good its glosses are.
- I3. Disambiguation is recast as verifying context–gloss pairs and taking the best-scoring gloss, so any lexicon with definitions can plug in without retraining for a fixed label set.
- I4. Ordinal labels are evaluated with weighted Kappa, MAE and RMSE, so a near-miss is penalized less than a total miss.
- I5. Results are broken down by top-k rank and by part of speech, showing that function words need separate handling because their glosses describe grammatical roles rather than meaning.
For Mova
How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:
- I1 (world): WordNet/FrameNet sense links in the ontology could store graded fits rather than one pick, so later steps can explain why an alternative sense was rejected.
- I2 (world): running the same text against both WordNet and FrameNet/VerbNet would expose coverage gaps in our compiled knowledge before those gaps cause answer errors.
- I3 (frames): when choosing a VerbNet class or frame for a predicate, each candidate's definition could be checked against the clause, and the verification score kept as an explainable justification.
- I4 (learn): when witness parsers or LLM teachers give graded judgments, weighted agreement would separate mild disagreement from real conflict when filtering silver data.
- I5 (answer): evaluation reports could split errors by word class and by rank, keeping function-word handling out of sense evaluation so it does not drag down the scores.
