An Egypto-Semitic Comparison

Summary

Hodge sets out to measure how close Egyptian is to Semitic in vocabulary. He works within a family he calls Lisramic (usually termed Afroasiatic). He uses Bergsträsser's list of 172 common Semitic roots as a stand-in for the proto-Semitic lexicon. Two pairs that share a root are merged, leaving 170 items. For each root he looks for Egyptian counterparts that fit a deliberately conservative table of regular consonant correspondences, avoiding elaborate sound-change explanations. Every candidate gets a confidence grade: clear cognate, cognate with a meaning shift, survival only as a hieroglyph's sound value, cognate with a notable formal difference, conjectured cognate, or merely "of interest". About 42% of the Semitic list (72 items) turns out to have plausible Egyptian cognates, and he expects this to approach 50% with further research. His conclusion is that Egyptian is not a Semitic language but is closely related to it. The result also gives a footing for reconstructing a shared Egypto-Semitic sound system before the other branches are brought in.

Key points

  • The base corpus is Bergsträsser's (1928) list of 172 Semitic roots, renumbered to 170 items. "Son"/"daughter" are counted as 7a/7b and "go up"/"upon" as 105a/105b.
  • The grading counts are: 5.1 clear = 17, 5.2 semantic shift = 13, 5.3 graphic-only = 4, 5.4 formal difference = 15, 5.5 conjectured = 23. A further 43 items are only possibly relevant (category 6).
  • Overall there are 72 cognates (42.35%) and 98 non-cognates. In 27 cases (about 16%) the cognate is also the ordinary Egyptian word for that meaning. Leaving out the conjectured class still gives 49 cognates.
  • The method assumes that proto-roots were mostly biconsonantal, so a match on two of three consonants is accepted. It also assumes the earliest-attested languages best preserve the old phonology.
  • The comparison is explicitly one-directional: it measures Egyptian against Semitic, not the reverse. It also screened out a late loan (No. 23).

Interesting ideas

  • I1. Each match gets an ordered confidence grade instead of a yes/no label, so headline figures can be reported both with and without the shaky tiers. This makes it clear how much of the result depends on weak evidence. — For Mova (learn): Silver-data items could carry tiers based on witness-parser agreement, and accuracy could be reported with and without the low tiers to show how much they matter.
  • I2. Hodge accepts only matches that obey a small, explicit correspondence table. Clever ad-hoc explanations are not thrown out but parked until better evidence arrives, which keeps the core result clean without losing hypotheses. — For Mova (learn): Self-induced repair rules could be applied only when they fit an established pattern table, with borderline rules quarantined in a pending pool rather than deleted.
  • I3. He notes that a list-based measure is asymmetric: starting from one side's list answers a different question than starting from the other side's. Making that direction explicit avoids overclaiming. — For Mova (learn): Evaluations comparing two parsers or UD dialects should state which side's inventory is the reference and, ideally, run both directions as a check.
  • I4. He separates "some cognate exists" from "the cognate is the everyday word for that meaning", the latter being the stronger signal. This distinguishes core overlap from peripheral overlap. — For Mova (world): When mapping concepts across WordNet/FrameNet/Wikidata, a match on the most frequent sense could be weighted above a match on a rare sense.
  • I5. He points to "semantic bundling", where one root covers naturally linked meanings such as green colour and vegetables. Recognising such bundles explains meaning shifts that would otherwise look accidental. — For Mova (world): The ontology could record typical bundle links, such as a property mapping to the things that have it, to help resolve polysemous lemmas in the world model.
