Genealogy of the Root of "Katb" (ک ت ب) in Semitic Languages, with an Analysis of its Meaning in the Qur'an and the Bible

Summary

The paper traces the history of the Semitic root k-t-b, best known through Arabic kitāb ("book, written text"), and compares how its derivatives behave in the Qur'an and the Bible. Using a historical-comparative-analytical method built on library sources, mainly bilingual and etymological dictionaries for each language, the authors check whether the root occurs in each major Semitic branch. Where it does occur, they compare its consonants and its meaning. The root turns out to be widespread and very stable in form. It is attested in Hebrew, Targumic Aramaic, Syriac, Mandaic and Ethiopic, but not found in Akkadian or Sabaic. "Writing" is the meaning shared by all branches. Hebrew senses of engraving and carving suggest the root first meant cutting marks into a surface. Later branches widened it, and Arabic acquired a sense found nowhere else. In both scriptures, writing is often attributed to God and tied to divine law. The study shows how comparative etymology can sharpen the reading of a key scriptural term.

Key points

  • Attestations: Hebrew kāthav (engrave, carve, write), used more than 200 times with derivatives in the Old Testament; Targumic Aramaic (build, write, request, entrust); Syriac kṯb; Mandaic ktb, rarely kdb; Ethiopic ktb.
  • The root is missing from the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary, so it is almost certainly absent in Akkadian. Sabaic absence is less certain because the only lexicon used (Beeston et al.) is incomplete.
  • Consonant correspondences:
    • the second radical t is spirantized to th in Syriac and Mandaic;
    • the third radical b is read v in Hebrew and Targumic Aramaic when it lacks the dagesh dot.
  • Semantic history:
    • the original sense was likely "carve"; "write" became dominant later;
    • the root probably arose in the north and spread to central and southern areas;
    • Chaldean added the sense "command, decree".
  • In the Qur'an, kitāb appears about 250 times, including the label "People of the Book". The Bible shows writing moving from stone, tablets and wood to ink on scrolls and paper.

Interesting ideas

  • I1. The authors treat an absence differently depending on how complete the source is: a missing entry in a comprehensive dictionary counts as real absence, while one in a partial lexicon stays inconclusive. — For Mova (learn): Evaluation and lexicon lookups could mark a missing analysis as either "confident negative" or "coverage gap", so negative controls are not polluted by holes in the resources.
  • I2. Meaning is reconstructed as a chain from concrete to abstract: physical carving, then writing, then decree or prescription, with each step backed by a dated witness. — For Mova (world): The verb ontology could store sense chains linking a physical action to its abstract extensions, so that readings like "it is written" can be explained as derived senses rather than unrelated homonyms.
  • I3. Writing that comes from an authority is read as obligation or law, not just as producing text. — For Mova (frames): Frames for verbs like write or prescribe could add a deontic reading when the agent is an authority, so the system infers a rule rather than a mere text-creation event.
  • I4. Regular sound correspondences let surface variants such as t/th and b/v be unified under one root. — For Mova (tokens): The lemmatizer could use explicit, rule-listed variant correspondences for archaic or dialectal English spellings, keeping each normalization explainable.
