FrameNet on the Way to Babel: Creating a Bilingual FrameNet Using Wiktionary as Interlingual Connection
Summary
FrameNet supports semantic role labeling, but comparable lexicons are scarce outside English. Earlier transfer methods either relied on parallel corpora, which suffer from polysemy errors, or on costly expert resources such as EuroWordNet. Wikipedia-based work covered almost only nouns. Hartmann and Gurevych instead use Wiktionary as a pivot between languages, since this crowd-built dictionary covers all parts of speech and offers translations into hundreds of languages.
First, they align FrameNet senses to English Wiktionary senses using the supervised, similarity-based technique of Niemann and Gurevych (2011), which allows zero or multiple matches. The translations attached to the aligned senses form FNWKxx, a lemma-level multilingual FrameNet. Second, they disambiguate these translations against the German Wiktionary, yielding FNWKde, a sense-level English–German lexicon enriched with German glosses, examples, register labels and synonyms.
The alignment reaches state-of-the-art quality, although fine-grained verb distinctions remain difficult. FNWKde holds up well against the manually annotated SALSA corpus. The approach offers an inexpensive, extensible route to FrameNet lexicons for less-resourced languages.
Key points
- FNWKxx links FrameNet senses to lemmas in over 280 languages via Wiktionary translations. For example, one sense of complete collects 39 translations in 22 languages.
- For German, FNWKxx contains 6,871 translations, compared with roughly 9,700 English lemma-POS pairs in FrameNet 1.5 (1,015 frames, 11,942 senses).
- The alignment performs well for coarse-grained matching but weaker for verbs at fine granularity. The authors suggest that using subcategorization information could help.
- As a by-product, English FrameNet gains several thousand new senses taken from Wiktionary.
- Both resources are released in UBY-LMF format and can be accessed through the UBY Java API (ukp.tu-darmstadt.de/fnwkde/).
