“Penser global, agir local” : Les coordinations antithétiques dans une grammaire de construction multi-dimensionnelle [“Thinking global, acting local”: Antonym coordinations in a multidimensional construction grammar]

Summary

The article describes French antithetical coordinate constructions, i.e., combinations of elements with opposite meanings such as "petits et grands" or "penser global, agir local". This description is integrated into a formal grammar of spontaneous French that is intended to be applied in NLP later on. What makes these constructions special is that they are simultaneously subject to constraints from several levels: lexical (antonymy), syntactic, semantic and pragmatic (the contrast effect). The author works within her own model, MDCxG. It is a multidimensional construction grammar that combines the pronominal approach and CxG, and it is formalized by means of Property Grammars (GP). In this model, coordination is treated as a paradigmatic pile rather than as a syntagm. The author first describes the phenomenon using examples from Usenet and spoken corpora. She then analyzes a single example step by step and shows how the new construction is incorporated into the grammar. The article contains no quantitative evaluation, since the grammar has not yet been implemented in a parser. The main thesis is that a detailed formalization of even a peripheral phenomenon tests the entire resource and improves it, in particular by refining the description of coordination in general.

Key points

  • The MDCxG model is non-lexicalized and non-modular: information from all linguistic levels is stored in a single resource and shares a common notation.
  • In the grammar, paradigmatic piles cover both coordination and the disfluencies of spoken language. The examples are drawn from Usenet forums and the CID spoken corpus.
  • After the antithetical constructions were added, some refinements were extended to syndetic coordination and to coordination in general. The author also verified that the grammar remained internally consistent.
  • The current version of the grammar has not yet been implemented in a parser, so there are no quantitative metrics. Configuration grammars (Estratat, 2006) are being considered for the implementation within the ANR PIITHIE project, as well as a possible dependency-based encoding for comparison with XDG.
  • The article was published in the journal TAL, vol. 49, no. 1 (2008), pp. 89–113.
