A Study on the Effectiveness of Differentiated Instructional Approach in Promoting English Grammar Learning Achievement on High School EFL Students, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Paper · 2022 · Yirgalem Girma

Summary

This classroom study, from Addis Ababa University, asks whether differentiated instruction helps Ethiopian high-school learners of English grammar more than the usual one-size-fits-all teaching. The authors argue that teaching aimed at the middle of a class leaves weaker students frustrated and stronger ones unchallenged, and that grammar weakness is a long-standing problem in Ethiopian EFL classes. They used a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design with two intact grade-12 sections and a non-equivalent control group. Both groups took the same grammar achievement test before and after the intervention. For ten weeks, one trained teacher taught the experimental section with tiered tasks, flexible grouping, scaffolding, anchor activities and purpose-made materials. The comparison section worked only from the textbook. According to t-test analyses, low, average and high achievers in the differentiated class all scored significantly better than their counterparts, while gender showed no significant difference. The study suggests that adapting tasks to readiness can raise grammar achievement across ability levels. It is evidence for teaching practice in low-resource EFL settings, although the sample is small.

Key points

  • Sample: 47 grade-twelve students from Keftegna 23 secondary school (23 experimental, 24 control), first semester of 2021/22.
  • Design: quasi-experimental and pretest–posttest, using intact class sections. A pretest checked that the groups were comparable, to limit selection bias.
  • Treatment: ten consecutive weeks of differentiated instruction (tiered activities, flexible grouping, scaffolding, anchored activities, new materials). The control group had conventional, textbook-only teaching.
  • One teacher, holding an MA in TEFL, received awareness training beforehand and agreed to stay for the whole study.
  • Results (t-tests): struggling, grade-level and advanced students all improved significantly versus their peers, and there was no significant gender effect.

Interesting ideas

  • I1. Results are reported separately for weak, middle and strong learners rather than as one class average, which shows whether a method helps everyone or only the middle.
  • I2. The groups were pretested to confirm they started at a comparable level before any treatment, so later differences can be credited to the intervention.
  • I3. Tiered activities keep one learning goal for everyone but vary task difficulty by readiness, so each learner works at a productive level.
  • I4. Both arms took the identical test, and the control kept its ordinary default material, which gives a fair "business as usual" baseline.
  • I5. Gender was checked as a subgroup where no difference appeared, a useful reminder that some slices should come out flat.

For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

  • I1 (answer): Break down school-course test and word-problem accuracy by difficulty tier, so gains on easy items cannot hide failures on hard ones.
  • I2 (learn): Before comparing a new model against a baseline, check that the evaluation splits are matched in difficulty and genre, as a sanity gate next to the negative controls.
  • I3 (learn): Build training and self-play curricula where the target construction stays fixed while sentence complexity is graded, and feed harder tiers only once easier ones are mastered.
  • I4 (tree): Evaluate the perceptron parser and gparse on the same frozen treebank split against the current default pipeline, rather than against a weakened strawman.
  • I5 (learn): Add slices where no effect is expected, such as name gender or swapped entity names, to show that an improvement does not depend on irrelevant features.
