Old and Middle English Bibliography 1997-1998

Paper · 1997 · Antonio Bravo García

Summary

This item is a bibliography rather than a research paper. It has no method, experiments or results. Antonio Bravo (University of Oviedo) compiled it for the journal SELIM. It is an alphabetical, author-ordered list of recent books on Old and Middle English studies, so that medievalists can see in one place what appeared in a given publishing window.

Most entries are monographs, edited collections, editions, translations and reference works. Topics include:

  • Chaucer, Langland, Malory and Beowulf
  • the Arthurian tradition
  • Anglo-Saxon and late medieval history, gender, religion and drama
  • historical linguistics

Each entry gives only author or editor, title, series, publisher and year. There are no annotations.

One caveat: the catalogue title says 1997–1998, but the document's own header reads 1996–97, and nearly all listed items are dated 1996 or 1997. For NLP purposes, its value is as a pointer to a few language resources of that era: concordances, a correspondence corpus, an electronic manuscript edition and specialised dictionaries.

Key points

  • The list has roughly 150 entries, mostly dated 1996–1997, and was compiled by Antonio Bravo, University of Oviedo.
  • Publishers that recur often are Boydell & Brewer, Blackwell, Garland, OUP, CUP and University Press of Florida.
  • Several entries are language or digital resources:
    • Kiernan's Electronic Beowulf (2 CD-ROMs, British Library)
    • research drawing on the Corpus of Early English Correspondence (Nevalainen & Raumolin-Brunberg)
    • Sutherland's Electronic Text
  • Several entries are concordances and lexical works:
    • a glossarial concordance to the Piers Plowman B Text (Matsushita)
    • a rhyme concordance to Il Filostrato
    • the Chaucer Name Dictionary
    • the Dictionary of Medieval Latin from British Sources
    • Wright's Medieval Thames Vocabulary
  • Linguistics titles include:
    • Biggam's Blue in Old English
    • Gasiorowski on Old English stress
    • Lass, Historical Linguistics and Language Change
    • two Fisiak volumes on Middle English

Interesting ideas

  • I1. A comparison of four editions of Troilus and Criseyde (Benson, Robinson, Root, Windeatt) treats one text as several witnesses and studies where they diverge.
  • I2. A glossarial concordance links every occurrence of a word to its gloss, which is an explainable bridge from surface form to sense.
  • I3. A dedicated name dictionary for one author's corpus (Chaucer Name Dictionary) acts as a closed, curated gazetteer for a bounded text world.
  • I4. Biggam's interdisciplinary study of a single colour term shows how deep one lexical field can go when it is tied to non-linguistic evidence.
  • I5. A rhyme concordance indexes text by sound pattern rather than by meaning, which gives a second, orthogonal index over the same corpus.

For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

  • I1 (learn): The same framing fits silver data, where spans on which witness parsers disagree are flagged for teacher review instead of being averaged away.
  • I2 (tokens): Lemma and sense decisions could keep pointers to the attested contexts that justify them, so each lemmatisation can be traced back.
  • I3 (world): Per-text or per-collection name inventories, for example for a fable set, could seed entity resolution before falling back to Wikidata.
  • I4 (world): Small, densely specified value domains such as colours or measures could be compiled as separate modules grounded in more than WordNet glosses.
  • I5 (back): Generation and the text → graph → text compressor could use form-level indices like rhyme or metre as constraints when rendering verse-like output.

Our summary of the paper, in our own words — not its text. The work belongs to its authors; read it at the links above.
