Old and Middle English Bibliography 1995-97

Paper · 1996 · Antonio Bravo García

Summary

This is not an experimental study. It is a bibliography published in SELIM 6 and compiled by Antonio Bravo (University of Oviedo). Its purpose is to help scholars of medieval English find books from the mid-1990s. The entries are listed alphabetically by author or editor, about 155 in total, with no annotation, commentary or evaluation. The coverage is broad: critical studies of Chaucer, Beowulf, Langland, the Gawain-poet and Arthurian literature; editions and facsimiles of manuscripts; historical linguistics and metrics; reference works such as concordances, a thesaurus and manuscript catalogues; and social and cultural history. Although the title says 1995-97, most items are dated 1995-1996, a few 1994, and one 1966 (probably a typo). The publisher Boydell & Brewer appears very often, especially for a 1996 wave of manuscript facsimiles. For an NLP library the list matters only as a pointer to historical-English resources. It contains no data, method or results of its own.

Key points

  • About 155 entries, alphabetical, with no annotations, compiled by Antonio Bravo, University of Oviedo.
  • Linguistic and reference works listed include:
    • Allen, Case Marking and Reanalysis, tracing how grammatical relations developed between the Old English and Early Modern English periods;
    • Kay & Roberts, Thesaurus of Old English;
    • The Index of Middle English Prose XI;
    • Oizumi, a bibliography of writings on Chaucer's English;
    • a concordance to the metrical Mandeville's Travels.
  • Many 1996 Boydell & Brewer facsimiles of key manuscripts are listed, among them Beowulf (Cotton Vitellius A xv), Cotton Nero A.x, the Vernon and Ellesmere manuscripts, and Harley 2253.
  • Linguistics titles cover historical syntax (Yamakawa), phrasal verbs and particles (Niwa), language contact (Fisiak), and metrics (Hutcheson, McCully & Anderson, Terasawa on Old English compounds).
  • There are visible typos and data glitches: misspelled names and titles, a 1966 date, and a duplicated year.

Interesting ideas

  • I1. Jimura, Nakao & Matsuo's list comparing the Blake and Robinson editions treats two editions of one text as parallel versions whose differences can be catalogued systematically.
  • I2. Tieken-Boon van Ostade's study ties multiple negation to how an editor chose between two versions of Malory, showing that negation patterns are a fragile point when text is normalised.
  • I3. The Thesaurus of Old English arranges vocabulary by concept rather than alphabetically, a meaning-first view of a lexicon.
  • I4. Allen's account of case marking and reanalysis frames grammatical relations as something that can be reassigned when surface marking changes.
  • I5. Releasing facsimiles alongside critical editions keeps the raw source next to the cleaned-up version, so every editorial choice stays traceable.

For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

  • I1 (learn): diffing analyses of two versions of the same sentence (e.g., original vs. lightly edited) could be a cheap consistency check for silver data from witness parsers.
  • I2 (tokens): normalisation or spelling repair should be tested on negation-heavy sentences, so cleanup never silently flips polarity before parsing.
  • I3 (world): concept-grouped vocabulary mirrors how WordNet/FrameNet-backed ontology nodes could be browsed and audited, grouping lemmas under shared world concepts.
  • I4 (tree): this supports keeping UD relations separate from morphological cues, so dialect conversion can remap relations when marking conventions differ.
  • I5 (back): the text → graph → text compressor could store a pointer to the original span for each generated sentence, keeping regeneration explainable against its source.
