Massively Multi-Cultural Knowledge Acquisition & LM Benchmarking
Paper · 2024 · Yi Fung, Ruining Zhao, Jae Doo et al.
Summary
Large language models often reflect Western-centric biases and lack culture-specific commonsense, especially about variation within a country. For example, Chinese New Year red-envelope customs differ between Beijing/Shanghai and Hong Kong/Macau/Guangdong. Earlier benchmarks either cover a few coarse cultures or mine noisy web corpora where regional detail disappears.
The authors build CultureAtlas from Wikipedia pages on cultural topics for every country. They follow hyperlinks two levels deep and add each page's version in the culture's main language, translated into English. An LM keeps only sentences stating generalizable norms, rewrites them to be self-contained, and fills a cultural profile frame (region, ethnolinguistic group, religion, age, gender, marital status, occupation). False counterparts come from prompting an LLM to invent untrue norms, verified through web search.
Human checks rated over 90% of samples valid. The resource covers far more sub-country regions and ethnic groups than prior datasets. It serves as a benchmark that exposes gaps in LM cultural awareness and supports building more culturally inclusive models.
Key points
- Coverage (Table 1): about 1,089 state/province-level regions, 10,436 city-level locations, 42 religions and 2,557 ethnolinguistic groups. This compares with 298 regions and 145 groups for CANDLE, the next-largest benchmark.
- Frame vocabularies: regions follow GeoNames, ethnolinguistic groups follow ISO 639-3 codes, and religions include groups with at least 1 million followers.
- Positive samples: LM-filtered, context-enriched Wikipedia norm assertions drawn from multilingual sources.
- Negative samples: LLM-generated non-factual norms, validated through web search.
- Evaluation and limitations: the paper benchmarks state-of-the-art foundation models, but the per-model scores are not in the provided excerpt. Labels are produced automatically, with a human quality check showing a 90%+ pass rate.
