The treatment of moods in the Syriac linguistic tradition: command and request

Summary
Farina traces how Syriac scholars came to describe "modes", the types of utterance and the moods of the verb. The concept was hard to pin down because it drew on three traditions: Greek Aristotelian logic, Greek technical grammar (Pseudo-Dionysius Thrax, Theodosius), and a native orthoepic practice for reading Scripture correctly. The study is a close reading of the sources, with particular attention to the imperative.
In the earliest material, from the 6th–7th centuries, the logical commentaries list kinds of discourse by what the speaker is doing pragmatically. The imperative appears there as one such kind, not as a verb form. In these texts the line between grammatical mood and discourse modality is often blurred, and the classifications also touch on prosody. Later writers give the imperative a progressively more detailed morphological description and separate the imperative form more clearly from the expression of command as a discourse function.
The paper matters for the history of linguistic ideas. It shows a speech-act-like typology being transmitted and gradually split into morphology on one side and pragmatics on the other.
Key points
- The Syriac words for "order" and "commander" come from the root *pqd: puqdānā (an abstract noun, often for divine commandment) and pāqōdā. Both terms are used metalinguistically for the imperative from the 6th century on.
- Imperative morphology:
- Syriac has a dedicated imperative only for the second person; third-person commands use the inaccompli (imperfect), sometimes introduced by particles.
- Classical grammars describe the imperative as an imperfect minus its person prefixes, for example ktūb "write!" from the root ktb.
- The imperative tends to be monosyllabic.
- Sergius of Rešʿaynā (d. 536), in his minor commentary on the Categories, lists four species of discourse: imperative, precative, interrogative and declarative. Only the declarative is truth-evaluable, so philosophers set the other three aside.
- Proba (6th c.), commenting on Peri Hermeneias, lists five species, adding the vocative after Ammonius. His classification rests entirely on the interaction between asker and asked:
- asking for a word gives the interrogative;
- asking for an action gives the vocative;
- asking something of a superior gives the persuasive;
- asking something of an inferior gives the imperative.
Interesting ideas
- I1. Proba sorts utterances with a small decision tree: is the speaker asking for something, is it words or an action, and is the addressee above or below the speaker?
- I2. In Syriac, third-person commands use a non-imperative form, so the "command" function and the "imperative" form do not coincide.
- I3. The logicians put declaratives (truth-evaluable) on one side and all request-type utterances (not truth-evaluable) on the other.
- I4. Each category in these sources is illustrated by a small situational scene saying who addresses whom.
For Mova
How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:
- I1 (frames): crate prag could rank speech acts with explicit, inspectable features like these, including relative social status, to separate a plea from a command.
- I2 (tokens): keep Mood=Imp in the en tagger strictly morphological, and let prag assign the command act separately so that indirect commands ("you will leave now") are not missed.
- I3 (world): only assertions should add facts to the world of the text, while questions, pleas and orders are stored as pending requests or obligations attached to speaker and addressee.
- I4 (learn): speech-act evaluation sets could use minimal pairs with the same wording but swapped speaker status, as negative controls checking that the model reads the relationship and not surface form.
