Orion-14B: Open-source Multilingual Large Language Models
Paper · 2024 · Du Chen, Yi Huang, Xiaopu Li et al.
Summary
Most open LLMs either centre on English, like LLaMA, or on English plus Chinese. Orion-14B, from OrionStar, is a 14-billion-parameter open model family that also gives Japanese and Korean deliberate attention. The base model follows the LLaMA2 design with a larger vocabulary and a wider FFN. It was pretrained on 2.5T tokens drawn from web pages, news, encyclopedias, books, code and academic texts. These sources were cleaned through normalization, harmful-content and personal-data filtering, perplexity- and model-based quality selection, and SimHash/embedding deduplication. The same deduplication was also applied against evaluation sets to limit contamination. Instead of fully shuffling the data, the authors scheduled different source types into different training stages to use the data more efficiently. They also released a chat model and several specialised variants. The chat model leads its 13–20B peers on MT-Bench and in a human pairwise arena, while results on standard benchmarks are mixed. For multilingual NLP work, the release offers a strong, openly available baseline and a tokenizer that compresses CJK text efficiently.
Key points
- Data: The corpus has 2.5T tokens. English and Chinese make up over 90%, Japanese and Korean over 5%, and the remainder covers Spanish, French, German, Arabic and other languages.
- Tokenizer: It uses BPE via SentencePiece with an 84,608-token vocabulary and 99.99% character coverage. It achieves the best compression ratios in the comparison table, for example 0.549 on zh_cn versus 0.554 for Baichuan2.
- Architecture: The model is based on LLaMA2, with the FFN dimension enlarged to 15,360 and RoPE used for positional encoding.
- Chat evaluation:
- Orion-14B-Chat has the top MT-Bench average of 7.37.
- On AlignBench it averages 5.51, behind Qwen-14B-Chat at 5.72.
- In a human arena, 14 annotators judged 3,562 questions, and Orion-14B-Chat received the most wins (1,172).
- Released variants:
- Orion-14B-Long handles contexts above 200k tokens.
- Orion-14B-INT4 is about 70% smaller and 30% faster, with roughly 1% quality loss.
- Orion-14B-RAG and Orion-14B-PlugIn target retrieval and function calling.
- The report does not describe how these variants were trained.
- Everything is available at github.com/OrionStarAI/Orion.
