Multilingual Autoregressive Entity Linking

Paper · 2022 · Nicola De Cao, Ledell Wu, Kashyap Popat et al.

Summary

The paper addresses Multilingual Entity Linking (MEL): mapping a mention in any language to an entry in a language-agnostic knowledge base (Wikidata). Earlier systems typically give each entity one representation, either a single vector or a name in a canonical language. The authors propose mGENRE, which extends the autoregressive GENRE model to the multilingual case. A sequence-to-sequence transformer reads the context with the marked mention and generates the target entity's identifier token by token. That identifier is a language ID combined with the Wikipedia title in that language. Constrained beam search over a prefix tree keeps the outputs to valid names across more than 100 languages, so no large dense vector index is needed. Because an entity can be predicted under any of its language-specific names, the model can exploit links between the source language and the target names. For languages with no training data, the target language is treated as a latent variable and summed out at inference. mGENRE sets new state-of-the-art results on three MEL benchmarks, offering a compact and accurate alternative to bi-encoder retrieval.

Key points

  • The paper compares three identifier strategies: a canonical name per entity, an N-to-1 mapping (language+name "L+N" or name+language "N+L"), and marginalization over languages. On Mewsli-9, with training only on its languages, L+N reaches 84.80 micro-average accuracy, compared with 83.20 for canonical names. Adding mention-table candidates raises L+N to 88.32.
  • The multilingual name catalogue covers about 89M names and needs only about 2.2GB of storage. Just 1.65% of names require the language tag to resolve ambiguity.
  • Marginalizing over target languages improves average accuracy by roughly 50% on languages unseen during fine-tuning.
  • The model achieves new state-of-the-art results on Mewsli-9, TR2016 hard and TAC-KBP2015.
  • Code is released in the facebookresearch/GENRE repository. The paper was published in TACL, vol. 10 (2022).
