Proverbs in Language Teaching: Using the Example of Let’s Speak Tigrinya (2018)

Summary

Busau studies the 44 proverbs in Issayas Tesfamariam's Tigrinya textbook Let's Speak Tigrinya (2018), the 22nd volume of the NALRC "Let's Speak" African Language Series. The textbook asks learners to memorize and recite these proverbs but gives no translations, pronunciation help or explanations, and it contains misprints. This makes the proverb sections nearly unusable for self-study. Busau fills the gap with a commentary on each proverb. Every entry gives:

  • the fidäl text exactly as printed, with transliteration and misspellings flagged;
  • a close translation, with literal renderings and inferred complements added where needed;
  • an interpretation, with grammatical notes;
  • links to earlier collections, plus attested regional or lexical variants.

He finds the selection mostly well-known and Eritrea-leaning, with little dialectal variation and a few notable Amharisms. Very few of the proverbs can be understood word by word. The work matters for two reasons: it makes the textbook usable, and it applies a more systematic method to Tigrinya oral tradition, which is still under-researched. It ends with a call for annotated proverbs in future Tigrinya teaching materials.

Key points

  • The corpus is 44 proverbs, spread over 9 of the textbook's 15 lessons at 4–6 per lesson. Most are chosen to match grammar just taught, such as numerals, infinitives and subordinate clauses.
  • The textbook has no audio CD, no gemination marking and only faulty transliteration. Proverbs are rarely discussed in the lessons, so teachers must supply the meaning.
  • The proverbs are compared against older work, including Leslau's Documents tigrigna (20 proverbs) and the large annotated Italian collections of 489 and 432 proverbs (Conti Rossini 1942; Di Savoia-Genova & Simonini 1943). Local collections are mostly unannotated alphabetical lists.
  • In proverbs, Tigrinya negated verbs often drop the suffix -n, so they can easily be misread as jussive.
  • The set appears to cover most or all of the 13 top-level themes in the Kuusi/Lauhakangas universal proverb classification.

Interesting ideas

  • I1. Layered annotation: each entry keeps the verbatim source, a normalized form with errors flagged, a free translation, a literal translation, recovered implicit material in brackets, and an interpretation, so no layer overwrites another. — For Mova (frames): store the literal frames and the intended (implicated) meaning of figurative text as separate, linked layers, so the reader can explain both what was said and what was meant.
  • I2. Marked reconstruction: contextually implied complements are added in square brackets, so every reconstruction is visibly labeled as inferred rather than present in the source. — For Mova (tree): mark elided arguments recovered during parsing or frame building with an explicit "inferred" flag, so later stages and explanations know they were never in the text.
  • I3. Variant clustering: the same proverb is traced across many collections and its wording variants are grouped as one expression; for example, "think thrice" and "think twice" count as the same saying. — For Mova (world): build a compiled lexicon of idioms and proverbs in which variant wordings map to one meaning entry, so paraphrased sayings resolve to the same figurative sense.
  • I4. Register-specific morphology: a fixed genre can break normal morphological cues, as with negation lacking its usual marker that looks like another verb mood. — For Mova (tokens): add tagger exceptions or tests for archaic or proverbial constructions, so set phrases do not get standard but wrong analyses.
  • I5. Literal is not enough: the study shows that word-by-word renderings almost never yield the meaning of a proverb, and that cultural explanation is required. — For Mova (answer): in QA on fables and tales, test whether the system can state the moral or figurative point and not just the literal events, using proverb-like morals as probe items.
