An Expanded Massive Multilingual Dataset for High-Performance Language Technologies (HPLT)
Summary
Modern LLMs need huge amounts of clean, varied text, yet open multilingual corpora remain scarce and uneven across languages. This paper presents HPLT v2, the successor to HPLT v1.2. The authors processed about 4.5 PB of web archives, most of it from the Internet Archive and the rest from Common Crawl, which makes the corpus a useful complement to datasets built mainly on CC. The rebuilt pipeline uses Trafilatura for text extraction and a modified OpenLID for language identification. It also adds robots.txt compliance tags, PII annotation, document quality scores from web-docs-scorer, and simpler cleaning rules. The output is monolingual data for 193 language varieties, plus English-centric parallel corpora and derived document-level and multi-way sets. Everything is released under CC0 together with the code. In machine translation experiments, models trained on v2 clearly beat those trained on v1.2, and adding HPLT v2 to OPUS improves results further. This suggests the new data contains content that existing resources lack, which is especially valuable for low- and mid-resource languages.
Key points
- Monolingual data: 193 language varieties, roughly 7.6T whitespace tokens (about 8T), 52T characters and 21B documents. It comes in a 21 TB "deduplicated" variant and a 15 TB "cleaned" variant, which keeps only robots.txt-compliant documents. English and other Indo-European languages dominate.
- Parallel data: about 380M sentence pairs (down from 1,277M raw pairs) for 50 languages aligned with English, with a median of 4M pairs per language. Sizes range from about 273K pairs (Sinhala) to over 29M (Finnish).
- Derived resources: DocHPLT v2 provides about 74M aligned documents with sentence and paragraph alignment. MultiHPLT v2 pivots through English to cover 1,275 language pairs and over 16.7B sentence pairs.
- MT evaluation: compared with v1.2, average xx→en scores rose from 28.5 to 32.7 BLEU and from 0.794 to 0.834 COMET. Combining HPLT v2 with OPUS outperformed either dataset used alone.
- Cost and limitations: the work used about 4.4M CPU hours and 106K GPU hours, mostly on LUMI. Known issues include residual LID and boilerplate errors, little filtering of machine-generated text, and CJK punctuation incorrectly normalised to Latin equivalents.
