Bibliography of Ethiopian Semitic, Cushitic and Omotic Linguistics XXII: 2018
Summary
This is not an experimental paper. It is the 22nd yearly installment of a running bibliography that tracks scholarly output on the Ethiopian and Eritrean branches of Afroasiatic. The problem it addresses is practical: publications on these languages are spread across journals, edited volumes, dissertations and local presses in several countries and languages, which makes them easy to miss.
The compilers collected publications dated 2018 and grouped them by language family:
- general Ethiopian Afrasian
- Ethiopian Semitic
- Cushitic
- Omotic
Several collective volumes are cited by short titles. A separate section lists 2018 reviews of earlier books, and an addenda block picks up overlooked 2017 items.
The result is a compact, cross-referenced reference list covering grammars, dictionaries, typology, historical classification, sociolinguistics and education policy. Its value is as a discovery tool. Researchers working on Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, Gurage varieties, Oromo, Somali, Sidaama, Beja, Wolaitta and others can locate recent work in one place, including items published locally in Ethiopia or written in Japanese or Amharic.
Key points
- The issue is Aethiopica vol. 22, pp. 124–133. The PDF header gives the year as 2019. It was compiled at Russian State University for the Humanities and Universität Hamburg.
- Four edited volumes are abbreviated in a Miscellanea block, among them Tosco's Afroasiatic: Data and perspectives and the Asmara proceedings of the 2016 International Conference on Eritrean Studies (xv, 687 pp.).
- New lexical resources are listed, including:
- a Kistanigna–Amharic–English Dictionary (liii, 772 pp.), dated 2010 EC = 2017/2018 CE
- a Haro–Amharic–English Dictionary (xxviii, 154 pp.)
- Notable studies include:
- Baker & Kramer on Amharic doubled object clitics treated as pronouns
- Bacovcin & Wilson's computational cladistics method tested on Afroasiatic
- Hudson's lexicostatistical subgrouping of Ethiosemitic
- Sjörs's 478-page monograph on standard negation in Semitic
- Reviews of earlier publications form their own section, covering about 15 books such as Petrollino's Hamar grammar and Elias's Tigre of Gindaʿ. The Addenda add ten 2017 items.
Interesting ideas
- I1. A work relevant to more than one family is listed in every applicable section rather than forced into one; for example, a Wälaytta–Kambaata noun comparison appears under both Cushitic and Omotic. — For Mova (world): let ontology entities and verb classes hold several memberships at once instead of a single parent, so lookups from any relevant class still find them.
- I2. Name variants of one author are tied together explicitly with an equals-alias, and co-authors get "see X" redirects pointing to the main entry. — For Mova (frames): coreference could keep an explicit alias table with a canonical head, so every mention variant resolves to one explainable entity record.
- I3. General comparative works carry a short scope note saying which sub-families they actually cover, marking partial rather than full relevance. — For Mova (learn): tag evaluation and silver sets with coverage notes, so a score is read only against the phenomena the set really exercises.
- I4. Late-discovered items from earlier years go into a visible Addenda block instead of being quietly merged back into past lists. — For Mova (learn): keep treebank and silver-data corrections append-only with a dated addenda log, so earlier evaluation results stay reproducible.
- I5. Dates in the Ethiopian calendar are kept alongside their Gregorian equivalent, and non-Latin titles are given in original script, transliteration and English gloss. — For Mova (world): store measures and dates with both the source system and a normalized value, keeping the original form for explanation while reasoning on the normalized one.
