Bibliography of Ethiopian Semitic, Cushitic and Omotic Linguistics XX: 2016
Paper · 2018 · Maria Bulakh, Susanne Hummel and Francesca Panini
Summary
This is the twentieth yearly instalment of a running bibliography on the Semitic, Cushitic and Omotic languages of Ethiopia and the Horn. It does not test a hypothesis. It is a curated catalogue of linguistic publications from 2016. The compilers, Bulakh, Hummel and Panini, group the entries into thematic and genetic sections: edited volumes (Miscellanea), Ethiopian Afrasian in general, Ethiopian Semitic, Cushitic, and so on. A later block catches up on items from 2014–2015 that earlier volumes missed. Each record gives full bibliographic data. Titles in Amharic, Japanese or Russian appear in the original script, with a transliteration and an English gloss. Ethiopian-calendar dates are converted to CE, and the entry flags when a broader work only partly covers an Ethiopian language. The collection spans philology and lexicography of Gǝʿǝz, Amharic and Gurage grammar and tense/aspect, sociolinguistics, orthography design, and dictionaries. It also includes a small computational strand: tag sets, annotated corpora and digital tools. The bibliography matters because it gives a single entry point to scattered, multilingual work on under-resourced languages.
Key points
- The 2016 list is built around three edited volumes: 150 Years after Dillmann's Lexicon on Gǝʿǝz studies, Multilingual Ethiopia (Oslo Studies in Language 8/1), and a third collection examining how Horn of Africa languages encode time.
- The computational items include:
- Hummel & Dickhut's part-of-speech tag set for Ancient Ethiopic;
- Vertan's computational tools for Classical Ethiopic;
- Rychlý & Suchomel's "Annotated Amharic Corpora" (TSD 2016, LNAI 9924);
- Tsegay Woldemariam's TIGTAGS morphosyntactic tagset for Tigrinya corpora (2014).
- Editorial and transcription issues get explicit attention. Examples are Bausi on editing and normalizing Ethiopic texts and Bulakh on problems of transcribing Gǝʿǝz.
- Several orthography proposals for minority languages appear, covering Halaabissa, Komo, Dobbi and Dhiraytata. There are also new multilingual dictionaries: Kambatissa–Amharic–English, Dime–Amharic–English, and Saaho–Tigrinya–Amharic–English.
- The bibliography uses cross-reference entries ("see X") so that each co-authored work is recorded only once.
Interesting ideas
- I1. Each multi-author work has one canonical record, and the other authors point to it through "see" stubs instead of duplicating it, which keeps the catalogue consistent.
- I2. Non-Latin titles keep three layers: the original script, a transliteration, and an English gloss, so no information is lost and the entry stays searchable.
- I3. Dates in a local calendar are stored together with their converted value (for example 2009 EC = 2016/2017 CE), and the ambiguity of the conversion is kept rather than hidden.
- I4. An entry that only partly falls within scope is marked "including Amharic" or similar, instead of being forced in or dropped.
- I5. Late-discovered items from earlier years go into a separate addenda section, so the main yearly list stays clean while still reaching completeness.
For Mova
How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:
- I1 (world): Entities with several surface names in the knowledge graph could get one canonical node, with lightweight alias nodes pointing to it, so that facts are never split across duplicates.
- I2 (tokens): Foreign-script or transliterated tokens could carry the original form, a normalized romanization and a gloss as separate fields, so the tagger can use the gloss while the output can still restore the original.
- I3 (world): Time expressions could be stored as ranges carrying their source system, so that event ordering stays honest when a conversion allows two possible years.
- I4 (answer): Answers built from a source that covers the question only partly could carry an explicit partial-coverage flag, which helps the reader judge how reliable the answer is.
- I5 (learn): Newly found silver or teacher annotations for already-closed evaluation sets could go into a dated addenda split, which keeps past benchmark numbers reproducible.
