Truso in the Old English Orosius and Tczew, Poland
Paper · 2021 · Andrew Breeze
Summary
This paper revisits a long-standing puzzle in the Old English Orosius: where was Truso, the Baltic trading place that the mariner Wulfstan reached around 891? Since Henry Sweet in 1883, most Anglo-Saxonists, and many Polish scholars, have placed it at Lake Drużno (Drausensee) near Elbląg. Breeze traces that consensus through more than a century of dictionaries, editions, translations and histories. He shows that it rests on repetition of Sweet's guess rather than on new evidence. He then defends a largely overlooked 1985 proposal by Stanisław Rospond, who identified Truso with Tczew (German Dirschau) on the Vistula's main channel. The argument rests on medieval spellings of the two place names. Tczew's early forms fit Truso closely, while the lake's recorded name has the wrong initial letter and an extra internal consonant. The town's site and long history as a trading centre support the case. The paper urges archaeologists and historians of early English, Viking and Polish contacts to rethink their mapping.
Key points
- Wulfstan's account is an interpolation in the Old English Orosius. Richard Hakluyt already printed a translation of it in 1598.
- Tczew is attested as Trsow (1193), Trssew (1263) and Treseu (1277). Rospond tied the name to early Polish treść, meaning 'reed', which suits a site above marshland.
- Lake Drużno appears as Drusin in the early 13th century. Its initial <d> and its <n> are incompatible with Truso.
- The identification with Drużno or Elbląg goes back to Henry Sweet. Bosworth, Whitelock, Bately, Godden and others repeated it, often with stated uncertainty.
- A referee pointed the author to two recent books:
- Kleingärtner 2014 covers Tczew's early medieval archaeology.
- Gardela 2015 still credits Marek Jagodziński's 1982 excavations near Lake Drużno as finding Truso, which shows Rospond remains ignored.
Interesting ideas
- I1. A candidate identification can be rejected when its attested spellings conflict on specific features, such as the first letter or an internal consonant, instead of relying on vague similarity.
- I2. Wide scholarly agreement here came from many authors copying one early source, so the agreement added no independent evidence.
- I3. The author catches a source that puts Königsberg at the wrong end of the lagoon by comparing the claim against the map.
- I4. The Vistula delta of the 9th century differed greatly from today's, so old descriptions must be read against period maps.
- I5. The debate partly hinges on what "the lake" refers to (inland lake or coastal lagoon) and on which river is the subject of a clause.
For Mova
How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:
- I1 (world): When linking place names to Wikidata entities, Mova could score candidates on explicit orthographic constraints and record which feature ruled each one out, keeping the link decision explainable.
- I2 (learn): Before accepting silver data agreed by several witness parsers, check whether the witnesses share a training source or rules, and discount agreement that is not independent.
- I3 (world): Spatial claims extracted from a text could be checked against the knowledge graph, with contradictions flagged rather than silently stored.
- I4 (world): Store geographic and other facts with time validity, so the world of a historical text is built from period-appropriate states rather than present-day ones.
- I5 (frames): Coreference and role assignment could keep competing antecedents as explicit alternatives with their evidence, rather than committing early to one reading.
