Development of Functional Arabic Grammar (Nahwu) Textbooks Based on Local Wisdom for Arabic Language Students

Summary

This study tackles a teaching problem in Indonesian Arabic programmes. Nahwu (Arabic syntax) is seen as hard, and the standard grammar books are traditional, dense and dull. Learners also study only foreign-culture content and learn little about Indonesian local wisdom. The authors, from Universitas KH. A. Wahab Hasbullah in Jombang, followed the Borg and Gall research-and-development model to build a university textbook titled "Talkhis Nahwi."

The book uses a functional approach: each grammar rule is linked to how it serves communication in everyday contexts. Its example sentences come from local traditions of the Jombang community. Content experts and design/media experts reviewed the book before it was tried with nahwu students. Validators rated it highly feasible. In the field trial, average scores rose from 50.4 before the course to 85.2 after it.

The work matters as an example of grounding abstract grammar in familiar cultural material. It is not an NLP paper: it contains no corpora, parsers or computational evaluation.

Key points

  • Method: Borg and Gall R&D cycle. The book was validated by experts, then run in a main field trial and an operational field trial with Arabic-education students.
  • Product: "Talkhis Nahwi," a textbook of 18 chapters. Each chapter contains an Arabic reading text about local culture or wisdom stories, the nahwu rules, and exercises or evaluations.
  • Expert ratings:
    • Content (material) experts gave 83%.
    • The design/media score differs across the paper's versions. The English abstract and the body report 100%, while the Arabic abstract and the conclusion report 88%.
  • Student questionnaires gave 85.5% in the main trial and 87.25% in the operational trial (a raw total of 1636). Both fall in the "very good" band.
  • Test means went from 50.4 to 85.2, a gain of 34.8. The paper reports only this pre/post comparison.

Interesting ideas

  • I1. Each grammar concept is taught through example sentences from a culture the learner already knows, so attention goes to the structure rather than to unfamiliar content.
  • I2. Functional grammar presents each rule by the communicative job it performs, not only by its formal definition.
  • I3. Validation is split between separate judges for content correctness and for presentation, and their scores are reported apart.
  • I4. The product passes through staged trials (main, then operational) before it is considered finished.
  • I5. The paper measures gain with a pre-test and post-test on the same learners, but without a comparison group, which leaves the size of the effect open.

For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

  • I1 (answer): School-course test readers could be probed with familiar-domain versus unfamiliar-domain texts of the same syntax, which would separate grammar failures from world-knowledge failures.
  • I2 (frames): Every UD construction handled by prag could carry a short note on its communicative function (for example, what a passive does to who-did-what framing), making frame decisions easier to explain.
  • I3 (learn): Evaluation could score linguistic correctness of an analysis and the clarity of its explanation separately, so a clear but wrong explanation does not hide behind a combined number.
  • I4 (learn): New repair rules or parser versions could be promoted through a small trial set first and then a wider operational set, keeping the results of each stage.
  • I5 (learn): Any before/after improvement claim for Mova should be paired with a negative control (an untouched baseline run on the same items) so the gain can be attributed to the change.
