Improving Self-Confidence, Enthusiasm, And Learning Satisfaction With mE-Book Practical Arabic Syntax and ARIAS Learning Model
Summary
The study tackles a familiar complaint in Indonesian Arabic teaching: secondary students find practical Arabic syntax (naḥw) hard to grasp and often lose motivation. The authors had earlier built and validated a multimedia electronic textbook (mE-Book) on the topic. Here they test it in class together with the ARIAS instructional model, which stands for Assurance, Relevance, Interest, Assessment and Satisfaction. Twenty grade-X students at Ma'had Nurul Furqon Malang took part in a one-group pretest–posttest experiment. They worked in small groups around laptops, presented their answers to each other, critiqued other groups' work, and received achievement certificates at the end. Data came from observation, questionnaires on confidence, enthusiasm and satisfaction, knowledge tests, and documentation. The analysis used a Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality check, paired-sample t-tests and n-gain. All measures rose significantly after the intervention. The authors read this as evidence that combining a digital textbook with a motivation-oriented teaching model helps both learners' attitudes and their syntax scores. The design has no control group, which limits how far the effect can be attributed to the intervention.
Key points
- Sample and design: 20 students in class X during the odd semester of 2022/2023, in a single group measured before and after treatment, with no comparison class.
- The mE-Book covers five syntax topics, moving from phrase to sentence:
- genitive construct (muḍāf ilayh),
- definite vs. indefinite nouns,
- prepositions (ḥarf jarr),
- subject–predicate (mubtadaʾ/khabar),
- the complete meaningful sentence.
- Normality (Kolmogorov-Smirnov) significance values were 0.571, 0.541 and 0.958 for confidence, enthusiasm and satisfaction, so all were treated as normal. The prose gives 0.985 for satisfaction, which is likely a typo.
- Paired t-tests gave Sig. = 0.000 for all three questionnaires:
- confidence: mean difference −12.5, t = −7.844;
- enthusiasm: mean difference −11.9, t = −5.785;
- satisfaction: mean difference −17.5, t = −8.386.
- Each ARIAS step maps to a concrete classroom action:
- motivating apperception at the start,
- group work with one laptop per group,
- inter-group presentation and rebuttal,
- teacher Q&A to correct misconceptions,
- a certificate of achievement as the "satisfaction" reinforcement.
Interesting ideas
- I1. Groups check each other's answers and must point out errors before the teacher steps in, so peer critique does the first round of correction. — For Mova (learn): competing witness parsers could be made to flag each other's disagreements explicitly before a teacher tier rules, so that only contested arcs reach the more expensive judge.
- I2. Improvement is reported both as a paired significance test and as normalized gain (n-gain), which scales the gain by how much room was left to improve. — For Mova (learn): reporting repair-rule or retraining gains as a share of the remaining errors would make improvements comparable across easy and hard treebanks. Pairing this with a negative control fixes the gap that a one-group design leaves open.
- I3. The materials build syntax up in layers: nominal phrases, then definiteness, then prepositional phrases, then the subject–predicate clause, then the full sentence. — For Mova (tree): a diagnostic suite ordered by construction complexity would show the level at which the parser starts to fail, rather than giving a single LAS figure.
- I4. Before running a parametric comparison, the authors first check whether the score distributions are normal. — For Mova (learn): evaluation scripts could test the distribution of per-sentence score deltas first, and switch to a non-parametric or bootstrap test when it is skewed.
- I5. Every stage of the ARIAS lesson is tied to an observable, concrete action, such as one laptop per group or an awarded certificate. — For Mova (answer): the student readers' school-course tests could similarly record each reasoning stage as an inspectable action, which keeps the answer pipeline explainable step by step.
