LitSearch: A Retrieval Benchmark for Scientific Literature Search
Paper · 2024 · Anirudh Ajith, Mengzhou Xia, Alexis Chevalier et al.
Summary
Researchers often look for papers that match a precise description, such as a particular method or setting. Older citation-recommendation datasets built queries directly from citation contexts, which tend to be noisy, vague, or dependent on surrounding text. LitSearch addresses this with a benchmark of 597 literature-search questions about recent ML and NLP papers. One part comes from GPT-4 rewriting inline citation paragraphs sampled from S2ORC, with targets restricted to the ACL Anthology. These were filtered by word overlap with target titles. The other part was written by ACL 2023 and ICLR 2024 authors about their own papers. The benchmark's authors manually reviewed every question for specificity and quality. They then evaluated BM25, dense embedding models, LLM reranking, and commercial search tools. GritLM led the dense retrievers and clearly beat BM25. GPT-4o reranking improved it further, while Google Search and similar tools lagged well behind. Because LitSearch separates embedding models more sharply than standard benchmarks, it is a useful and realistic testbed for retrieval research.
Key points
- The dataset has 597 questions: about 351 inline-citation questions and 246 author-written ones. The author-written set was drawn from 292 submissions received after inviting 1,027 authors.
- Corpus documents are long, averaging 6,041 words for full texts and 134 for title plus abstract. By comparison, MS-MARCO passages average about 56 words.
- GritLM reaches 74.8% average recall@5, which is 24.8 points above BM25. GPT-4o reranking adds another 4.4 points.
- Commercial search engines and research tools reach at most 42.8% recall@5, up to 32 points behind the best dense retriever.
- LitSearch discriminates between models better than existing benchmarks. On the specific subset, GritLM and E5 differ by 15 nDCG@10 points, yet they score nearly the same on MS-MARCO. Data and code are available at github.com/princeton-nlp/LitSearch.
