Detección de terminologización en sustantivos

Summary

The paper deals with the automatic detection of terminologization: the process by which an ordinary noun acquires a new, highly specialized meaning in a particular domain. The authors give the example of the Spanish "semilla": in general language it means a seed, while in programming it denotes the initial value of a pseudorandom number generator. Common term extraction tools (Sketch Engine, AntConc, Termostat) compare word-form frequencies against a reference corpus. As a result, they struggle to detect terms that have the same form as general-language words. The authors propose a different approach: comparing a noun's co-occurrence profiles in a specialized corpus and in a general-language corpus. A noticeable change in the set of neighboring words is taken as a sign of a new terminological meaning. The method was tested on a corpus of research papers on natural language processing. This field was chosen because it has many neologisms, including ones formed through terminologization. The authors describe the work as preliminary, but the results show that the method helps select nouns with a high likelihood of terminologization. It may be useful to terminologists and to researchers of semantic change.

Key points

  • The method's main signal is a shift in the lexical co-occurrence profile between the specialized and reference corpora. The method builds on earlier work by Ahumada (2024).
  • Data: a corpus of NLP research papers. Publication: Procesamiento del Lenguaje Natural No. 74 (March 2025), pp. 277–289, DOI 10.26342/2025-74-19.
  • The implementation code and results are openly published on the project website: tecling.com/neuter.
  • The work is related to other approaches to detecting semantic change: co-occurrence-based (Gonen et al., 2021) and word-embedding-based (Hamilton et al., 2016). The bibliography includes UDPipe and Llama/Ollama, but how exactly they were used cannot be determined from the provided excerpt.
  • The available excerpt contains no numerical evaluation metrics because the middle of the paper is missing. The authors describe the approach's limitations and their plans for developing it in a separate section.
